Boiler Warranties and Guarantee Registration

How long does my boiler warranty really last? Do I need to register it, and what happens if I forget? What do I have to do each year to keep it valid?

Here you can check what a boiler guarantee covers, how to register it in time, the servicing that keeps it going, and the faults and parts that were never included.

A small model of a wall-hung gas combi boiler sits on a kitchen table beside a blank commissioning logbook, a blank certificate, a wall calendar showing a marked date, and a laptop with a blank screen ready for online registration.

A boiler warranty is a manufacturer's promise to repair or replace parts that fail through defective workmanship or materials, and it is not automatic. It is earned at installation and kept by servicing. The term is set by the maker and the installer's accreditation, and the full term usually depends on the boiler being registered within 30 days of installation1.

The length varies widely. Ideal states that its boiler warranties vary between 2 and 12 years, and that a boiler warranty covers only manufacturing issues with the appliances, not radiators or pipework2. Baxi advertises parts and labour warranty up to 10 years on its range3. Vaillant's domestic guarantee requires registration within 30 days of installing the appliance, and failure to register within that period results in the guarantee reverting to 12 months from the date of installation1.

What the guarantee does not do is insure the heating system. Vaillant states that the guarantee applies only to boiler component failures and does not apply to any other central heating system components external to the boiler1. Baxi states that its boiler warranty covers the boiler and integrated controls4. The cost of annual servicing is not included in the guarantee1.

What a boiler warranty actually covers

A manufacturer's guarantee is narrower than most households assume. It covers the appliance, not the system around it. Vaillant states that the guarantee applies only to boiler component failures and does not apply to any other central heating system components external to the boiler1. Ideal puts the same limit plainly: the boiler warranty only covers manufacturing issues with the appliances, and does not extend to radiators or pipework2. Baxi's cover is described as the boiler and integrated controls4.

What is funded varies by maker. Vaillant states that the guarantee will cover material and labour charges to repair or replace components within the boiler against manufacturing defects from the installation date, where the work is done by Vaillant or a Vaillant authorised Gas Safe registered engineer1. Ideal states it will, at its option, repair or replace a boiler free of charge where it suffers a mechanical or an electrical breakdown as a result of defective workmanship or materials9.

The length and terms can vary between products, and Vaillant notes that many boilers come with a manufacturer's guarantee but the length and terms can vary5. That is why the certificate matters more than the badge: the same brand can sell a boiler with a short standard term and a much longer one when a particular accredited installer commissions it.

Two structural points follow. First, a guarantee is not a maintenance contract: it pays for failures it defines as manufacturing defects, not for wear, and it does not pay for the annual service that keeps it alive1. Second, it is tied to the appliance rather than the household, which is why registration records and the commissioning paperwork matter at the point of sale of a home.

Typical length: two to 12 years, with ten years from a reputable maker

Terms in the UK market run from a short standard period to a long accredited-installer term. Ideal states that its boiler warranties vary between 2 and 12 years2. Baxi advertises hassle-free parts and labour warranty up to 10 years across its range3. Vaillant's ecoTEC plus combi range carries a standard 2 year warranty, upgradeable to a 7 year warranty when registered by a Vaillant Advance installer, with an option to purchase extended warranty up to 10 years when registered by an Advance installer10.

Independent guidance puts the market norm lower than the headline figures. Nesta's work on Scottish homes describes a gas boiler warranty as 7 to 10 years as standard11. The gap between that and the 12 year figures is explained by accreditation: the longest terms are conditional on a specific installer network, not on the brand alone.

Maker or rangeStated termCondition
Ideal boilers2 to 12 yearsVaries by product and installer2
Baxi rangeUp to 10 yearsParts and labour3
Vaillant ecoTEC plus2 years standard, 7 years registered by a Vaillant Advance installer, up to 10 years extendedRegistration and installer accreditation10
Ideal Vogue MAX10 years, or 12 years with a MAX accredited installerRegistered within 30 days12
Gas boiler, market norm7 to 10 yearsIndependent guidance11

The practical reading is that a ten year term is achievable but conditional. It is not a property of the model; it is a property of how the boiler was bought, installed and registered. A household comparing two quotes for the same appliance may be comparing a two year term with a ten year term without either quote saying so.

Registration: the 30-day deadline that protects the full term

Registration is the step that converts a short default term into the advertised one, and it is time-limited. Vaillant states that the boiler guarantee must be registered within 30 days of installing the appliance, and that failure to register within this time period will result in the guarantee reverting to 12 months from date of installation1. Ideal states that to qualify for the full warranty period the boiler must be registered within 30 days of installation9. Baxi states that if the boiler warranty is not registered within 30 days of installation, the warranty defaults to the standard two years5. Intergas requires registration within 30 days of the boiler being installed13.

The information needed is specific. Vaillant requires the full 28 digit serial number of the appliance, and states that the 28 digit serial number can be found on the control panel of the boiler and in the Benchmark logbook which the installer should have provided after the installation1. Registration can be done through the myVaillant web portal, through the installing Vaillant engineer, or over the phone with the service team, and calls cost up to 13p per minute14. The details required are the serial number, the date of installation and the installation address15.

Registration itself is free. Ideal states there are different ways you can register your boiler for free warranty, and that if your installer has already registered your boiler warranty for you, you do not need to register it again2. Baxi advises that it is beneficial to the homeowner to make sure that either the installer has registered the warranty, or that they have done it themselves5.

Conditions that keep the warranty valid: annual servicing and the Benchmark logbook

A registered guarantee stays valid only while the conditions attached to it are met, and the central condition is servicing. Vaillant states that most guarantees are also dependent on the boiler being serviced and maintained, at least annually5. Independent guidance agrees: many boiler warranties require regular servicing to remain valid, and a boiler guarantee may require the boiler is serviced at least once a year, otherwise the guarantee is invalidated6. Ideal's MAX Confidence terms state that at the end of each 12 month period following installation the boiler must be serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer, otherwise the warranty will lapse12.

The second condition is the commissioning record. Ideal's warranty terms list a call-out fee condition where there is no completed Benchmark commissioning sheet or equivalent control document present9. Vaillant's registration route depends on the same document, since the serial number is recorded in the Benchmark logbook the installer should have provided14. The HHIC, which publishes the Benchmark scheme, states that boiler manufacturers offer generous product warranties on new appliances, but this is conditional on the heating system being effectively cleaned at the time of installation17.

The cost of servicing sits outside the guarantee. Vaillant states plainly that the cost of annual servicing is not included in the guarantee1. Servicing is therefore a running cost that protects a separate asset: the term of the guarantee.

Who may install and service the boiler: the Gas Safe requirement

Gas work in the UK is restricted to registered engineers, and the guarantee terms repeat the requirement. Vaillant states that installation and commissioning must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and that the boiler must be serviced annually by a Vaillant or other registered Gas Safe Registered engineer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions1. Ideal's terms require the boiler to have been installed and commissioned within 12 months of manufacture by a registered Gas Safe installer in accordance with the installation and servicing booklet guidelines, and serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer9. Vaillant notes that a service ensures the boiler remains efficient and safe and must be carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer5.

The same rule applies to non-gas appliances in their own way. Dimplex states that gas products must be installed by a qualified Gas Safe engineer8. For liquid fuel installations, OFTEC operates a registration scheme and a workmanship warranty covering liquid fuel-fired boiler, cooker, storage and supply installations, solid fuel-fired stove installations, renewable heating technology installations, heating and plumbing installations, ventilation installations (not including air conditioning), and electrical work covered by building regulations Part P18.

The consequence of using someone unqualified is stated by an independent source: attempting repairs or a boiler installation yourself, or using someone who is not properly qualified, could void your boiler warranty in the likely event it causes damage19. A separate independent source puts the risk in cost terms: you may void your boiler's warranty and end up paying significantly more to have larger repairs done20.

What voids a warranty: unqualified repairs, non-genuine parts and contaminated systems

The exclusion lists across makers are long and consistent, and they share a theme: the guarantee covers manufacturing defects, not the consequences of how the system was built, used or repaired. Ideal's standard terms state that the warranty does not apply if the boiler is removed from its place of installation without prior consent, or to defects caused by inadequate servicing, deliberate action, accident, misuse or third party interference including modification or non-compliant attempted repair, or by the design, installation and maintenance of the central heating system, or by de-scaling or work from hard water scale, aggressive water or sludge from corrosion9. Ideal's MAX Confidence terms repeat the pattern, excluding defects from inadequate servicing, deliberate action, accident, misuse or third party interference including modification or an attempted repair which does not fully comply with industry standards, and defects resulting from incorrect installation of the boiler, the flue system or the facility for condensate disposal12.

Intergas excludes any damage, defect or breakdown caused by inadequate servicing of the boiler, or deliberate action, misuse, damage or accident, or third party modification or attempted repair which does not fully comply with industry standards13. Vaillant states that moving the boiler to another property without Vaillant's written consent will invalidate the guarantee1.

Water quality is a recurring cause. The HHIC states that manufacturer warranties on new appliances are conditional on the heating system being effectively cleaned at the time of installation17. Sludge and scale damage appear explicitly in Ideal's exclusion list9.

Standard exclusions: what the guarantee never pays for

Beyond the voiding conditions, every guarantee carries exclusions that apply even when the cover is fully valid. Vaillant states that the guarantee does not cover consequential losses relating to any other costs or expenses caused by or arising as a result of the breakdown of a Vaillant boiler, and that it does not cover installation in mobile leisure accommodation vehicles such as boats and caravans1. Ideal's MAX Confidence terms exclude any other costs or expenses caused by or arising as a result of the breakdown of an Ideal boiler12. Intergas states that the warranty does not cover any connected system or accessories such as time switches, thermostats, motorised valves and external pumps13.

Worcester Bosch's guarantee exclusions include water and oil storage tanks, external electric wiring and filters21. Dimplex's guarantee does not apply to graded sales, meaning products purchased as a second or refurbished good, and is void if the product is resold8.

Consumer rights sit alongside the guarantee rather than inside it. Citizens Advice states that you won't have any rights if the boiler isn't working because of wear and tear, using it incorrectly or an accident, or if the previous owner paid for the boiler22. Dimplex states that its guarantee does not in any way diminish or affect statutory consumer rights in connection with the product, and that the consumer contract is held with the retailer8.

Maker guarantees compared: Vaillant, Worcester, Ideal, Intergas and Dimplex

The UK boiler market is concentrated. Independent guidance states that in the UK a new boiler is likely to be one of Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Alpha, Viessmann or Ideal, and that boilers from popular brands like Viessmann, Vaillant or Worcester Bosch tend to last longer as they are of higher quality23. Guarantee terms differ between them in ways that matter more than the badge.

Vaillant's domestic guarantee requires registration within 30 days, installation and commissioning by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and annual servicing by a Vaillant or other registered Gas Safe Registered engineer1. Its ecoTEC plus combi range carries a standard 2 year warranty, upgradeable to 7 years when registered by a Vaillant Advance installer, with an option to purchase extended warranty up to 10 years when registered by an Advance installer10.

Ideal's terms set the boiler registration deadline at 30 days, require installation and commissioning within 12 months of manufacture by a registered Gas Safe installer, and require annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer9. Its MAX Confidence warranty gives a 10 year boiler warranty, or 12 years in the case of a Vogue MAX installed by a MAX accredited installer, provided it is registered within 30 days; in the case of Max boilers both the boiler and included system filter need to be registered simultaneously12.

Baxi's warranty covers the boiler and integrated controls, requires registration within 30 days, and defaults to the standard two years if that is missed4. Intergas limits its warranty to 12 months from the date of installation or date of manufacture as recorded on the Benchmark Commissioning Checklist if its conditions are not met, and covers any non-domestic applications with a 12-month warranty only13.

Dimplex sits outside the boiler market but its guarantee terms are a useful contrast in structure. The standard guarantee period is twelve months from the date of original purchase unless otherwise stated, it applies to products purchased and used within the United Kingdom only, and registration within 28 days of the date of purchase is required to activate a free extended guarantee8. Two conditions are unusual and worth noting: the guarantee period for corrosion damage is reduced by 50% when the product is installed less than 200m from the coast, and optional extras such as wall brackets are guaranteed against manufacturing faults for 12 months8. Replacement is with an identical model or nearest equivalent, the original guarantee continues to apply to the replacement product, and disconnect and reinstall costs are not borne by the manufacturer unless agreed in writing8.

Out-of-guarantee cover: Maintenance and Support Plans from Worcester and Vaillant

An older boiler out of guarantee

Once the manufacturer's term ends, cover becomes a paid product rather than a warranty. Worcester states that if your boiler is under twelve years of age, out of guarantee and you have not already taken out a plan, you could take out the Worcester maintenance and support plan, and that these plans are designed to maintain your Worcester boiler and Worcester controls24. The plan includes ongoing hints and tips to keep the boiler in good working order24.

The distinction between a guarantee and a plan is structural. A guarantee is funded by the manufacturer and conditioned on installation and servicing; a plan is a contract a household buys, and its scope is defined by the plan rather than by defect. Worcester's guarantee exclusions, which include water and oil storage tanks, external electric wiring and filters, illustrate the kind of boundary a plan sets for itself21.

Age is the practical gate. Independent guidance on replacement planning asks whether a boiler is more than 10 years old, and states that the average lifespan of a boiler is 10 to 15 years25. Vaillant states that a boiler system typically lasts 15 years depending on how well it is maintained, and independent guidance describes a well-maintained boiler as lasting up to 15 years26. A boiler at the end of that range is unlikely to be accepted onto a plan on the same terms as a newer one.

For households weighing cover against replacement, the relevant comparison is not the plan premium alone but the remaining life of the appliance. A boiler with several years left and a valid service history is a different proposition from one at the end of its expected life.

How long warranties matter as gas boiler sales are phased out

Guarantee length is a claim about how long a maker expects an appliance to last without a manufacturing failure, and that claim is being made against a changing policy background. Flogas states that the UK Government has proposed phasing out the sale of most new fossil fuel boilers from 2035, with exemptions for unsuitable homes28. Vaillant states that the Government plans to outlaw gas boilers in newly built homes by 202726.

The dates are proposals rather than settled law in every case, and they differ by nation and by sector. For a household buying a gas boiler now, the practical effect is on the horizon of the guarantee rather than on its validity. A ten year term taken out in the mid-2020s runs to the mid-2030s, which is the period in which the proposed phase-out dates sit. That does not invalidate the guarantee, and no source in this area states that it does. It does mean the appliance and its cover are being bought into a period of policy change, and that the servicing record which keeps the guarantee valid is also the record that demonstrates the appliance has been maintained.

The independence question is straightforward. A manufacturer's guarantee is a claim on one company, and it depends on that company continuing to honour it, on an accredited installer network, and on an annual service carried out by a registered engineer. It reduces the cost of a manufacturing failure; it does not remove the household's dependence on gas supply, on the grid, or on the maker. Households wanting to reduce that dependence have other routes, including heat pumps compared with boilers and heat batteries and zero emission boilers, and the wider picture is set out in boilers and home heating.

Questions

Answers here, and more on their own pages.

How do I register my Vaillant boiler warranty and what information do I need?

Vaillant takes registration through the myVaillant web portal, through the installing Vaillant engineer, or over the phone with its service team. The information required is the serial number, the date of installation and the installation address. Registration must be completed within 30 days of installation to activate the guarantee. Calls to the service team cost up to 13p per minute.

Where do I find the 28-digit serial number on my boiler?

Vaillant states that the 28 digit serial number is on the control panel of the boiler, and also in the Benchmark logbook that the installer should have provided after installation. On a heat pump it is on the back of the unit. Vaillant requires the full 28 digit serial number to register an appliance.

What happens if I miss the 30-day registration deadline?

The full term is lost and the guarantee reverts to a much shorter default. Vaillant states that failure to register within 30 days results in the guarantee reverting to 12 months from the date of installation. Baxi states that an unregistered warranty defaults to the standard two years. Ideal states the period reduces to 12 months from installation.

How do I contact Dimplex to make a guarantee claim?

Dimplex guarantee terms give a claims line of 0344 879 3588. Engineer working hours are Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm. The standard guarantee period is twelve months from the date of original purchase unless otherwise stated, and it applies to products purchased and used within the United Kingdom only.

Does a boiler warranty transfer if I buy a house with the boiler already installed?

It depends on the maker. Baxi states that if you move house, as long as the warranty was registered, the boiler warranty stays with the boiler. Vaillant states that moving the boiler to another property without its written consent invalidates the guarantee. A registered warranty is therefore the document that carries the cover with the appliance.

Is the cost of labour and installation covered when a part is replaced under warranty?

Vaillant states that the guarantee covers material and labour charges to repair or replace components within the boiler against manufacturing defects from the installation date, where the repair is by Vaillant or a Vaillant authorised Gas Safe registered engineer. Ideal states it will, at its option, repair or replace a boiler free of charge for a mechanical or electrical breakdown from defective workmanship or materials.

Can I take out a Maintenance and Support Plan for an older boiler that is out of guarantee?

Worcester states that if your boiler is under twelve years of age, out of guarantee and you have not already taken out a plan, you could take out the Worcester maintenance and support plan. The plans are designed to maintain your Worcester boiler and Worcester controls, and include ongoing hints and tips to keep the boiler in good working order.

Does registering a warranty cost anything?

No. Ideal states there are different ways you can register your boiler for free warranty, and that if your installer has already registered it, you do not need to register it again. Baxi advises homeowners to make sure either the installer has registered the warranty or that they have done it themselves.
