Smart controls and the myVAILLANT app

Vaillant states that one of the leading causes of failure in heating systems is frozen pipes, which can cause pipes to burst or complete boiler failure². The condensate pipe is the weak point. An F28 fault code can be caused by a frozen condensate pipe, which the householder can fix, and when this happens the boiler will fail to start, meaning no heating or hot water²⁷. The signs are an F28 code on the display or a bubbling and gurgling sound from the boiler while in use²⁷. An F29 error means the boiler flame went out; in freezing weather it could be a frozen condensate pipe, otherwise pre-payment meter credit should be checked before calling a professional²⁷.

Vaillant's other guidance is to pour hot, not boiling, water over the pipe to thaw the ice⁶. Northern Gas Networks suggests holding a hot water bottle or heat wrap around the pipe instead²⁸. Servicing, repairs and the fault codes that matter

Vaillant's position is that a boiler should be serviced once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and that annual servicing maintains the guarantee after the first year²¹. Where the range has limits
