Vaillant Heating Controls and Thermostats

Vaillant's heating controls are the thermostats and programmers that sit alongside its boilers and heat pumps: the sensoCOMFORT, sensoHOME and sensoROOM families, the older vSMART and VRC 700, and the myVAILLANT connect internet gateway that puts any of them on a phone. The maker states that all its controls are compatible with Vaillant products from 2006 onwards, and that they are designed to work with Vaillant boilers through its own eBUS technology¹.

The practical question for a household is not which thermostat looks best but what the control chain depends on. Local control at the thermostat and boiler keeps working without a network. What Vaillant controls are and the range at a glance

Vaillant sells controls as part of a system rather than as standalone gadgets. The maker's own framing is that combining a new Vaillant heating system with a regulating control can often achieve an efficiency class of A+¹⁰. That is a system-level claim about the boiler and control together, not a rating for the thermostat on its own.

The current range divides by job. sensoCOMFORT is positioned for multi-zone and renewable systems, sensoHOME for intuitive single-zone control, and the sensoROOM range for simple, wireless room management¹¹. sensoCOMFORT and sensoHOME are both programmable room thermostats providing time and temperature control in one device¹². sensoROOM is a wireless room thermostat for flexible heating control, compatible with Vaillant boilers⁴.

Older controls remain in circulation and in the compatibility lists. vSMART works with all the current range of Vaillant boilers via eBUS, giving anytime, anywhere control of heating and hot water¹³. The VRC 700 appears alongside the senso models in the gateway's compatible-controls list⁷. The myVaillant app can also control vSMART and VRC 700 from a phone or tablet¹⁴.

eBUS: why Vaillant controls are designed for Vaillant boilers

Vaillant controls are not universal. The maker states that they have been specifically designed to work with Vaillant boilers thanks to its own eBUS technology, and acknowledges in the same guidance that some non-Vaillant controls do work with its products¹. That is a one-way statement: Vaillant controls on Vaillant appliances, with a concession that third-party controls may also work. It does not say a Vaillant thermostat will drive another maker's boiler.

eBUS is described by Vaillant as the language its products use to talk to each other, allowing boilers and heat pumps to carry out more complex decisions rather than just turning on and off¹⁵. It is the protocol through which Vaillant heating systems communicate, and it is only available on Vaillant products manufactured after 2006². The gateway inherits the same boundary: myVAILLANT connect is compatible with Vaillant eBUS appliances from 2006 and newer².

What eBUS buys a household is modulation rather than switching. A simple on/off thermostat tells the boiler to fire or stop; a communicating control can ask for a lower flow temperature and let the boiler modulate down, which is the mechanism behind weather compensation and load compensation. Vaillant states that its whole systems have enhanced load compensation, automatically adjusting the temperature of the water leaving the boiler and entering the heating system¹⁶. Weather compensation adjusts the heating system based on external temperatures¹². Both depend on the control and the boiler speaking the same protocol, which is the practical reason the maker ties its controls to its own appliances. sensoCOMFORT, sensoHOME and sensoROOM: which fits which home

The three families overlap in function and differ in scope. sensoCOMFORT is the intuitive control to manage heating and hot water, works with all Vaillant heating appliances including boilers and heat pumps, and is compatible with myVAILLANT connect and the myVaillant app for a fully integrated smart home heating system⁹. It comes with weather compensation as standard⁹. sensoHOME is the single-zone option, a programmable room thermostat giving time and temperature control in one device¹². sensoROOM is the wireless room thermostat for flexible control, compatible with Vaillant boilers, and positioned for householders wanting smart heating technology with a simple, intuitive design⁴. When paired with the myVAILLANT connect gateway, sensoROOM enables app control for setting heating schedules and managing the system remotely².

The choice turns on zoning and heat source rather than on features. A single-zone home with a combi boiler is the sensoHOME case. A home with multiple zones, a system boiler and cylinder, or a heat pump is the sensoCOMFORT case. A home where wiring a room thermostat is awkward, or where a wireless room unit is wanted, is the sensoROOM case. Remote control is not built into a Vaillant thermostat. It is a chain. Vaillant states that the internet gateway must be installed with its senso range of controls to give full system visibility via the myVaillant app⁴. Combining myVAILLANT connect with a sensoCOMFORT gives full system visibility wherever you are⁶. The gateway is described as a plug-and-play solution giving all Vaillant appliances the ability to integrate into a smart home system, and it utilises the myVaillant app¹⁶.

Once that chain exists, the app allows temperature to be set, heating to be scheduled, energy saving tips to be received, temperature to be adjusted remotely and energy usage to be monitored¹². It can be controlled from a mobile phone or tablet¹⁴, and myVAILLANT is described as an app that allows homeowners to control their Vaillant appliances in a smarter, faster, more intuitive and more technologically advanced way¹⁹. The gateway can be used with boilers, heat pumps and hybrid systems⁷.

Voice control runs through the same chain. Vaillant states that the myVaillant app allows temperature adjustment through simple voice commands with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit⁶, and that its smart thermostats work with Apple HomeKit when paired with the myVAILLANT connect gateway¹⁰. What smart controls mean for household energy independence

A Vaillant control system splits cleanly into a part that works without anyone else and a part that does not. Local control at the thermostat and at the boiler continues regardless of the network. Weather compensation, load compensation and the boiler's own modulation are functions of the control and the appliance talking over eBUS, and they do not need a server¹⁶. Vaillant states that some smart controls learn the thermal behaviour of the building and use weather compensation so that when a household wants between 18°C and 21°C, it gets it automatically¹². vSMART is described as starting to understand the home's heating needs as soon as it is installed, making the boiler work smarter to minimise energy bills¹³.

The dependent part is everything reached through the gateway. Remote control, energy monitoring, smart home integration, appliance health monitoring and remote assisted support all run through myVAILLANT connect, home broadband, Vaillant's servers and the app¹¹. Vaillant states that the gateway monitors the health of a heat pump and notifies through the myVaillant app if an error occurs⁶, and that the subscription provides remote assisted appliance support and appliance health check reports⁴. Two distinctions matter here. First, smart meters and smart heating controls are separate things: the Welsh Government's guidance notes that smart meters are independent of smart heating controls, though combining the two can enhance the ability to manage heating and energy use remotely²⁰. Second, smart controls are defined by their connectivity: the Energy Saving Trust states that the main difference is that smart controls are connected to the internet and offer more functionality than conventional controls²². Cost and warranty: what controls add to the bill

Vaillant does not publish a list price for its controls in the material available, so control costs are installer-quoted as part of a system. What is published is the subscription position and the guarantee structure around servicing. Vaillant describes a free Smart Home Subscription requiring the myVAILLANT connect gateway installed alongside the heating system²³, and a free Smart Home Subscription designed to provide effortless control over the home heating system⁶. myVaillant Web is described as the free online service portal for homeowners⁵. No charge for the app itself is stated.

On guarantees, Vaillant's Cover & Care packages add guarantee years on top of an existing term: 3 additional years on one package, 5 on another, and 8 on a third²⁴. Vaillant states that prices may vary depending on the guarantee registered by the installer, and that additional abortive and revisit fees apply if an Appliance Function Check cannot be completed or signed off²⁴. Those conditions sit on the servicing side rather than on the control itself, but they shape the total cost of ownership of a Vaillant system.

One further figure sits outside Vaillant's own documents. Ofgem's approved innovation measures list records a 12-year warranty at no cost to the end-user on the Vaillant aroTHERM Plus air source heat pump²⁵. That is a heat pump warranty recorded in an official scheme document, not a control warranty, and it is the kind of term that depends on the installation route. How Vaillant controls are bought and installed in the UK

Vaillant controls reach a household through the installer who fits the boiler or heat pump, or as a later addition to an existing Vaillant appliance. The maker's UK operation is Vaillant Group UK Ltd, registered at Nottingham Road, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 1JT¹⁷. The company manufactures under two brands, Vaillant and Glow-worm, making high-efficiency boilers and heat pumps at Belper, with a separate facility in Derby producing hot water cylinders¹⁷.

Installation is not a plug-in job in every case. Vaillant notes on its controls leaflet that an additional plug socket may be required⁶. The gateway is described as plug-and-play, but it still has to be installed with the senso controls to deliver full system visibility⁴. Because the control communicates over eBUS, the appliance it connects to must be a Vaillant product from 2006 or newer².

The buying route is therefore the same as the boiler route: through a heating engineer, with the control specified as part of the system. Vaillant's own service structure runs through myVaillant Web, where a householder can register an appliance, manage guarantee, repair and service information, book and manage repair appointments online and activate the Smart Home Subscription⁵. Common complaints about Vaillant controls and servicing

The recurring friction points in Vaillant's own documentation are worth reading before committing to the ecosystem. The first is the gateway dependency: without myVAILLANT connect, the senso controls give local control only, and the app features that households buy into, remote scheduling, energy monitoring and health alerts, are unavailable⁴. The second is the compatibility boundary at 2006. A Vaillant appliance older than that sits outside eBUS control².

The third is servicing conditions. Vaillant's guarantee covers repair of defects related to the manufacture of the appliance, covering parts and labour, completed by a Vaillant Service Engineer⁵. It excludes wear and tear, wilful damage, abnormal storage or working conditions, accidental damage, negligence, damage by animals, rodents, birds or pests or external factors, and failure to operate per instructions¹⁹. Vaillant also reserves the right to invalidate the guarantee and refuse further attendance if employees or agents encounter verbal abuse, physical abuse or any other harm¹⁹. The fourth is app churn. Vaillant's release log shows a steady stream of updates, from version 2.21 in September 2024 through 3.0 in April 2025, 3.3 in September 2025, 3.5.0 in December 2025, 3.7.0 in March 2026 and 3.8.0 on 3 June 2026⁸.
