In this guide
A smart thermostat is an internet-connected thermostat that gives you digital control over your home's central heating1. The device itself is a one-off purchase, but a growing share of the features that make it "smart" sit behind a recurring charge. In the UK market the picture is mixed: some makers give the full app away, some sell an optional tier, and some bundle a free service with an installation that depends on a gateway and a compatible appliance.
The subscription question matters for household energy independence because it decides who keeps the controls working. A thermostat that needs a paid tier, a cloud account or a manufacturer's gateway to run its schedules is only as independent as that arrangement lasts. A thermostat whose core functions work without a recurring fee keeps the household in charge of its own heating.
This page sets out what a subscription actually buys, which UK brands charge, what the terms commit a household to, and what happens when a plan lapses or a company changes its conditions.
What a smart thermostat subscription actually buys you
A smart thermostat controls heating and helps you manage how your central heating is set and adjusted1. The hardware does the switching; the app and the cloud service do the thinking. A subscription is the charge for the thinking.
What sits behind the paywall varies by maker, but the pattern is consistent. The free tier usually covers remote control, schedules and voice assistants. The paid tier adds features that depend on continuous data or on the maker's servers: location-based heating that reacts to whether anyone is home, open window detection, weather adaptation, and the analytics that turn heating history into advice. Energy Saving Trust describes the underlying capability plainly: smart heating thermostats may interpret what you input, such as your preferred room temperature, learn from what you do, react to other data like weather forecasts, and some have a learning function that predicts behaviour from how you set and adjust heating and how you occupy the home8.
That is the substance of what a subscription buys: prediction and automation, not basic control. A household that is content to set a schedule and adjust it by phone gets most of the practical benefit from the free tier. A household that wants the thermostat to work out the schedule itself is buying the paid tier.
The cost position is worth stating without decoration. Energy monitors and smart thermostats generally come at an additional cost, with subscription costs for premium services, and they are operated through an app on a mobile or tablet9. The device is a purchase; the premium features are a running cost. Neither is free, and the subscription is the part that recurs.

Free of charge or paid: the subscription models on the UK market

The UK market splits into three models, and the split is not always obvious from the product page.
Free core, paid premium. tado° includes remote control via its app, Smart Schedules, full smart home and voice assistant integration via Matter, Multi-Room Control, Room Link, and step-by-step DIY installation guides with any tado° product at no additional cost10. Its AI Assist tier, which adds Geofencing, Open Window Detection, Preheat Before Arrival, Weather Adaptation, Adaptive Heating, Holiday Mode and full Energy IQ insights, is a subscription10. tado° states that AI Assist users save up to 55% more than free app users, a maker figure that applies to its own product10.
Free service tied to hardware. Vaillant's Smart Home Subscription is free, and requires the myVAILLANT connect internet gateway11. Mixergy sells a paid care plan rather than a software tier, covered below.
No service fee at all. The Passiv Smart Thermostat is listed among Heat Pump Ready programme projects with no service fee12.
The device prices that sit underneath these models vary widely. Which? lists the Google Nest Smart Thermostat E at £199 and the Habi Wireless Smart Thermostat at £6213. Confused.com lists the Hive Smart Thermostat from £13014. Which? puts a smart thermostat for boiler heating controls at around £100 to £25015, and Uswitch puts most smart thermostats at £100 to £200, noting that add-ons such as installation push the total higher2. Those are retail prices read at the dates given, and installation is quoted separately by installers.

Vaillant Smart Home Subscriptions: what the free service includes and requires
Vaillant's free Smart Home Subscription is designed to provide effortless control over a home heating system, backed by assisted appliance support11. The service includes a quarterly health check report to check key system components are running smoothly, and Vaillant offers remote support and advice on the heating system by phone11.
The gateway is the gate. With the seamless addition of the myVAILLANT connect internet gateway to a new heating system, a household can access the benefits of the subscription11. Without it, the service does not run.
Eligibility under the terms is specific. To receive the free subscription a household must own or have use of a post-2006 model Vaillant boiler or heat pump, be at least 18, have an iOS or Android device, and have the myVAILLANT connect gateway installed with subscription services activated6. The subscription is available free of charge and runs on a rolling basis indefinitely until cancelled6.
There is a compatibility limit inside the health check. The extended metering function data within the health check report is available for specific appliances only, which include the ecoTEC plus from 2024 onwards, the ecoTEC exclusive from 2016 onwards, and heat pumps; other appliances are not compatible6. A household with an older or different Vaillant appliance can hold the subscription but will not see the same depth of reporting.
What the free subscription funds is set out in the terms: a quarterly health check of the customer's system using the extended metering function, hints and tips, app fault notifications, and remote monitoring with technician support6. For a household's independence, this is a service that depends on the gateway, the maker's servers and a compatible appliance. It costs nothing to run, but it is not a local control arrangement.
Mixergy Care Plan Plus: cover, cost commitments and the 18-month minimum
Mixergy's Care Plan Plus is a different kind of subscription: not a software tier but a cover plan for a hot water cylinder and its peripheral components. The minimum initial subscription period is eighteen months5. A household can subscribe at any time within the first five years following installation of the Mixergy hot water cylinder5.
The cover is long-dated. Mixergy-supplied peripheral components and the labour for replacing them are covered for up to 25 years, for as long as the subscription is maintained5. The installation work to replace a peripheral component is covered under Care Plan Plus for as long as the plan runs5. The plan does not cover replacement installation work for the Mixergy hot water cylinder itself5.
Conditions attach. All of the household's responsibilities under the Mixergy Warranty and the Mixergy Care Plan must be complied with5. Mixergy recommends that the operation of the safety valves, meaning the temperature and pressure relief valves, is checked on an annual basis by a qualified professional following the guidance in its installation and servicing guides5. The same annual check is repeated in the Care Plan terms16.
The Care Plan is described by Mixergy as a subscription option, and subscribing while complying with the Care Plan responsibilities maintains the cylinder's warranty without submitting annual service documentation16. That is the practical trade: a recurring payment in exchange for the paperwork and the peripheral-component risk moving to the maker.

What subscriptions cover and what stays your responsibility

A subscription moves some risk to the provider and leaves the rest with the household. The boundary is worth drawing precisely, because it is where most disputes start.
Covered under a plan such as Mixergy Care Plan Plus: Mixergy-supplied peripheral components, including the domestic hot water expansion vessel, and the labour to replace them, for up to 25 years while the subscription is maintained5. Covered under Vaillant's free subscription: the quarterly health check, hints and tips, app fault notifications, and remote monitoring with technician support6.
Not covered, and remaining the household's responsibility: the Mixergy hot water cylinder's own replacement installation work5, compliance with the warranty and care plan responsibilities5, and the annual safety valve check by a qualified professional5. On the Vaillant side, the household must keep a compatible appliance, the gateway installed and the subscription services activated for the service to run at all6.
There is a wider point about what a heating app can and cannot see. Smart thermostats such as Hive and Nest connect to wifi so a household can control heating and hot water through a smartphone, tablet or desktop17. But they can be expensive and have an installation cost, and having one means tracking only the heating, so a household cannot keep an eye on electricity and gas usage through it17. The energy monitoring that sits alongside a smart meter is a separate arrangement, and the supplier is responsible for supplying and fitting smart meters, including maintaining the meter and ongoing billing18.
For independence, the split is clear. A subscription buys monitoring, replacement labour and support. It does not buy the household out of its own maintenance duties, and it does not remove the dependence on the maker's servers, gateway or app.
Warranty versus subscription: tado°'s 2-year direct-service cover as an example
A warranty and a subscription are different instruments, and tado° illustrates the difference. The tado° Premium Direct-Service Warranty provides consistent protection for the full 24 months on purchases from tado.com or an authorised retail partner4. It is not included with products purchased through unauthorised sellers, including eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and other secondary-market or classified sites4.
The warranty's value lies in how claims are handled. By waiving the standard burden of proof required by local consumer laws, tado° keeps the claim process simple, and it uses remote diagnostic tools to troubleshoot and resolve issues instantly, with no returns necessary4. Rapid replacement is ensured if a hardware defect is confirmed4.
That is a warranty, not a subscription: it comes with the product and costs nothing extra. The subscription sits alongside it. tado° also offers a refund guarantee on the Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen): not happy with your savings in the first 12 months, return tado° for a full refund with no proof needed19. The control mode feature is free for all Smart Thermostat X first and second generation users19.
The distinction matters for a household weighing independence. A warranty is a right attached to a purchase, enforceable for a fixed period. A subscription is a service that continues only while payments continue and the provider keeps offering it. Where a maker's warranty depends on buying through authorised channels, a second-hand purchase removes that protection entirely, whatever the device can do.
"It is not included with products purchased through unauthorized sellers, including eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and other secondary-market or classified sites."
Price changes, cancellation and cooling-off: your exit rights

Exit rights differ by plan, and the terms are the only reliable guide.
Mixergy Care Plan Plus can be cancelled at any time after the minimum subscription period has expired5. Once cancelled, the service persists for the remainder of the billing period and the following payment is not withdrawn from the account5. If Mixergy terminates the plan, payments cease and any outstanding cover period is reimbursed5. Mixergy reserves the right to increase the price at any time to reflect changes in business costs and/or inflation, and to amend the terms at any stage, with customers notified in advance5.
Vaillant's free subscription runs on a rolling basis indefinitely until cancelled6. Vaillant reserves the right to terminate the subscription and stop providing the services at its discretion for any reason, issuing a prorated refund based on the time remaining in the month6. That is a provider-side termination right, not a customer refund route.
The Netatmo subscriber offer shows how promotional terms are bounded. It is reserved for Netatmo subscribers, and the accessory is added after entering the promo code MYGIFT7. An accessory corresponding to the type of thermostat, wired or wireless, is automatically added to the cart free, limited to one accessory per type of thermostat regardless of quantity purchased, and subject to available stock7.
For comparison, some adjacent arrangements carry clearer withdrawal rights. Cadent's Hybrid Heating programme states that participants are free to withdraw at any time with notice, and full terms and conditions are offered to all programme members20. Smart meters are a separate case again: a household does have the right to refuse a smart meter21, and changing to a smart meter is free22.
Data, gateways and apps: what running the service asks of your home
Every subscription model in this market depends on a live connection between the home and the maker. That is the price of the service, separate from the money.
The hardware layer comes first. A smart thermostat connects to Wi-Fi, which allows it to form part of a more connected home heating system1. Smart thermostats such as Hive and Nest connect to your Wi-Fi so you can control your heating and hot water through your smartphone, tablet or desktop23. Most smart heating controls link to a phone, and heating can be controlled via smartphone, tablet or laptop, or by telling a smart speaker what you want8.
The gateway layer is specific to some makers. Vaillant requires the myVAILLANT connect internet gateway for its Smart Home Subscription11. tado° uses a different approach: its devices form a stable, easy-to-extend Thread network in the home19, and the app guides installation step by step, customised to the heating system, with the ability to install tado° while offline19.
The app layer is where the subscription lives. Depending on the model, a smart thermostat may allow app control, voice control, hot water settings, location-based heating, reminders or alerts, open window detection, routine learning, and heating-use tracking1. Most smart thermostats allow multiple routines to be programmed so the home is always at the desired temperature24. The free ivie app is an example of a no-charge route to heating data24.
For independence, the dependency chain is: device, Wi-Fi, gateway where required, maker's cloud, app. A household that loses any link loses the service, even where the thermostat itself still switches the boiler. That is the structural difference between a subscription feature and a local control.

Do subscriptions pay for themselves in energy savings?
The honest answer is that a subscription is not a savings product, and the evidence does not support treating it as one.
Smart Energy GB states that a smart thermostat could save money, but savings aren't guaranteed, and that any cost benefit comes from reducing wasted heating rather than from the thermostat itself, so results will vary from home to home1. The variables it names are the home, heating habits, existing controls, energy prices, and how the thermostat's features are used1.
The headline saving figure in the UK guidance is modest. Confused.com lists installing a smart thermostat and controls to fine-tune heating as cutting up to £110 a year from bills3. Against a device price of £100 to £2002 and a recurring subscription on top, that figure does not by itself justify a premium tier. It is a saving from better control, not from the subscription.
The cost side is real. A household may have to pay for the device and the installation25. Energy monitors and smart thermostats generally come at an additional cost, with subscription costs for premium services9. The maker claim that AI Assist users save up to 55% more than free app users is a tado° figure for its own product and should be read as such10.
There is a timing point that applies to any heating control purchase. The best piece of advice is to look into replacing an old thermostat before it gets too cold, before the autumn gets too chilly24. That is about comfort and installation scheduling, not about subscription value.
For a household's energy independence, the calculation is straightforward. A subscription buys automation, monitoring and support. It does not buy a guaranteed bill reduction, and the saving that does exist comes from using the controls well, which the free tier largely permits.
