British Gas Home Energy Installations: What It Fits and What It Covers

British Gas is the best-known national brand fitting boilers and heat pumps in the UK, and it sells both the installation and the aftercare. Its heat pump service began in the South West in 2022, at a home in Ivybridge, Devon, before being rolled out nationwide¹. The offer is a survey, installation and aftercare package, with a Warm Home Promise that returns the householder's money if the heat pump does not reach an agreed temperature, and a discounted rate on heat pump electricity for a fixed period².

On cost, the headline figure is grant-assisted. A government press release of 23 May 2024 states that British Gas and Octopus Energy were both offering complete heat pump installations from £500³. That sits against independent evidence that a heat pump installation generally costs between £7,000 and £14,000⁴, and Nesta's estimate of about £10,500 to buy and install, with a range of £8,000 to £15,000⁵. The gap is the grant, not a discount on the equipment.

For a household, the independence question is straightforward. A British Gas heat pump moves a home off gas for heating but keeps it on the electricity grid and on an electricity supplier, and the aftercare relationship runs through one company. A British Gas boiler keeps the home on the gas grid and on a gas supplier. Neither is self-sufficiency; both are a change of dependence.

What British Gas offers in the UK

The heat pump service is the newer half of the offer. British Gas started installations in the South West before rolling the service out nationwide, and the first installation was completed at a home in Ivybridge, Devon in March 2022¹. The package is a survey, installation and aftercare, with the Warm Home Promise money-back commitment if the heat pump does not reach an agreed temperature, and a discounted rate on heat pump electricity for a fixed period².

The boiler side is the longer-established business, and it is sold with cover attached. British Gas HomeCare is a service plan rather than an installation product, and it comes in tiers. HomeCare Basic covers the gas boiler and controls, including all repairs and, subject to certain terms such as boiler age, replacement of the boiler if necessary, plus accidental damage protection and an annual boiler service⁸. HomeCare Essential includes everything in Basic and extends protection to repairs to the central heating, including radiators, pipework and the hot water cylinder⁸. HomeCare Classic adds plumbing and drains: repairs to leaking hot and cold water pipes in the home and outbuildings, the water supply pipe within the property boundary, and unblocking and repairing drains and waste pipes⁸.

An annual boiler service is included as standard across the entire HomeCare range⁸. That matters for the independence picture, because a service plan is a continuing commercial relationship: the householder is not buying a one-off installation and walking away, but paying for ongoing access to a national engineer network.

Specifications and standards the work must meet

There is no published British Gas specification sheet for its installed products in the evidence here, so the standards that govern the work are the useful reference point. Heat pump installations need to comply with UK Building Regulations, especially in the areas covering energy efficiency, electrical safety and overall system performance⁹. That is a general requirement on the installation, not a British Gas claim.

Where a heat pump is metered, the metering guidance sets out what is required. A gas meter used to monitor gas input to a heat pump must have a resolution of 10 litres or equivalent for other units, and meet Class 1.5 of the Measuring Instruments Directive; a gas meter to monitor gas input is required only where it is not possible to meter heat output from the gas boiler at the accuracy class and resolution specified¹⁰. That applies to hybrid systems with an integrated gas boiler.

For solid fuel boilers, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme regulations name BS EN 303-5:2021 as the approved standard, covering heating boilers for solid fuels, manually and automatically stoked, with a nominal heat output of up to 500 kW, including terminology, requirements, testing and marking¹¹. Gas boilers are assessed under the legislation implementing Directive 90/396/EEC, the relevant UK legislation being the Gas Appliances (Safety) Regulations 1992¹².

What the warranty and cover actually protect

Two different things are being sold, and they are easy to confuse. The first is a guarantee on a repair. British Gas states that boiler repair quotes include parts and labour plus a 12 month guarantee on all work and parts⁶. That is a workmanship and parts guarantee on the repair itself.

The second is the HomeCare policy, which is a contract of cover rather than a warranty. HomeCare Basic covers the gas boiler and controls, including all repairs and, subject to certain terms, replacement of the boiler if necessary, plus accidental damage protection and an annual boiler service⁸. HomeCare Essential adds central heating repairs including radiators, pipework and the hot water cylinder⁸. HomeCare Classic adds plumbing and drains⁸.

On a heat pump installation, the guarantee structure is typically two layers: a manufacturer's warranty covering the equipment itself, and an installer's guarantee covering the quality of the workmanship and the installation as a whole⁹. That is the general pattern for heat pump work, and it is the structure a householder should expect to see documented, with the two layers named separately.

What it costs

The published figures come from different sources and different dates, and they do not agree, so both ends need stating. On heat pumps, the government's May 2024 press release records British Gas and Octopus Energy both offering complete heat pump installations from £500³. Independent reporting puts the total cost of installation generally between £7,000 and £14,000⁴, and Nesta's case-study figure is about £10,500 to buy and install, with a range from £8,000 to £15,000⁵. The £500 figure is after grant support; the others are the underlying cost.

On boilers, Nesta's assumptions use flat installation prices of £1,550 for flats, £1,860 for medium-sized homes and £2,270 for detached houses, held for ten years¹⁴. A separate independent case study puts buying and installing a new gas boiler at roughly £2,000⁵. These are modelled or case-study figures rather than British Gas quotes.

The grant that closes much of the heat pump gap is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers between £5,000 and £6,000 towards the cost and installation of a heat pump⁴. It operates in England and Wales only⁷, and it is installer-led, which means the installer applies rather than the householder¹⁵. In the year ending September 2024, 49% of government-supported heat pump installations in the UK were funded by the scheme¹⁶.

The company's status and the grant landscape

British Gas is active. The Energy Ombudsman states that British Gas Evolve customers should continue their dispute with British Gas, which confirms the brand as the responsible entity for those customers¹⁷. That is a different position from the many small utility and energy firms that appear separately on the ombudsman's dispute pages, each listed with its own status.

The wider grant landscape around the brand has shifted. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps and, in limited circumstances, biomass boilers, in homes and non-domestic buildings¹⁸, and it covers England and Wales⁷. The Renewable Heat Incentive, the predecessor scheme, covered ground and air source heat pumps and biomass boilers GB-wide¹⁹. The Great British Insulation Scheme ends on 31 March 2026²⁰.

There is also a Wales-specific dimension. The Welsh Government has set out support to help Welsh households invest in greener homes²¹, and has responded to UK Government action on the Great British Insulation Scheme and ECO4²². Where a household sits in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland therefore changes which scheme is available, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not extend to Scotland or Northern Ireland.

What it means for household energy independence

A British Gas heat pump changes the fuel a home depends on rather than removing the dependence. The home comes off the gas grid for heating, but it stays on the electricity grid and on an electricity supplier, and the aftercare relationship runs through one national company. The Warm Home Promise and the discounted heat pump electricity rate are commercial terms attached to that relationship, not a route to self-sufficiency².

The policy direction behind the grants is explicit about the aim. The British energy security strategy sets out how Great Britain will accelerate homegrown power for greater energy independence²³. The Carbon Budget Delivery Plan and the Boiler Plus requirement sit in the same frame: Boiler Plus requires existing households in England to install an additional energy saving measure from a choice list at the point of installing a new or replacement combi gas boiler in an existing dwelling in England²⁴. Notably, the Energy Company Obligation decision records that the English Boiler Plus standard was not made a specific ECO requirement throughout Great Britain, so installations follow building regulations for each nation²⁵.

For a household weighing the options, the honest position is that a national installer offers scale, a single point of contact and a documented aftercare route. It does not offer independence from the grid, from a supplier or from the company itself.
