In this guide
British Gas is the largest household energy supplier in the UK, supplying more than 8 million homes and businesses, and the largest supplier for gas1. It is a subsidiary of Centrica, a multinational that owns multiple companies with similar interests in the market, and it trades as Scottish Gas north of the border1. Its scale is the defining fact about it: it is the incumbent against which every other supplier is measured, and the supplier Ofgem most often turns to when a smaller company fails.
For a household, British Gas offers two distinct things. The first is gas and electricity supply, on a range of fixed rate tariffs including a standard fix, electric vehicle tariffs and a Dimplex Quantum tariff for storage heaters1. The second is HomeCare, a boiler and home services cover product that sits alongside the supply business, with packages from as little as £2.50 a month3.
The independence question is straightforward and worth stating plainly. A British Gas supply contract keeps a home on the gas grid and on a national supplier, with the price set by wholesale markets and the price cap rather than by the household. HomeCare adds a service relationship with the same company. Neither changes where the energy comes from.
What British Gas offers UK households
The supply business covers gas and electricity for domestic customers across Great Britain. British Gas Trading holds the encompassing supply licences1. The company describes itself as currently supplying more than 8 million homes and businesses across the UK, and as the largest and longest-operating supplier1. It is the largest supplier for gas2.
Tariffs are structured around fixed rate products. British Gas offers a standard fix, electric vehicle tariffs and a Dimplex Quantum tariff aimed at storage heaters1. From June 2026 it is one of the suppliers offering tariffs with a lower standing charge as part of a one-year Ofgem trial1. Cancellation costs £75 per fuel for home energy customers1.
Beyond supply, British Gas runs HomeCare, a boiler and home services cover range, and a boiler repair service. It also has a solar and battery arm: it was among the suppliers bringing plug-in solar panels to market, and it states it is pleased to be bringing this technology to its customers6. On the export side, British Gas accounted for 20,473 registered installations, 7.6% of the total, in the fifth year of the Smart Export Guarantee7.
The company's reach extends into support work. Its energy debt grants are available to both British Gas customers and customers of other energy suppliers8. Its parent Centrica announced a three-year £2.4 million partnership with The Multibank in February 2026 to help households in or facing poverty across the UK1.

Specifications: what the service actually includes

The supply side is defined by its service standards rather than by a product specification. British Gas offers direct debit and cash or cheque payment, prepayment meters, web chat, SignVideo and ring backs5. Its telephone line is 0330 808 3880, with weekday opening hours of 8am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 2pm and closed on Sunday; web chat runs 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on Saturday5. A separate listing gives 0330 100 0056 for Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm9. A freephone number, 0800 011 9110, and a local rate number are also published10.
For customers who need additional support, British Gas provides free gas safety checks, bills and letters in Braille, large print or on a CD, the ability to nominate a person to manage the account, and quarterly meter readings or a smart meter installation11.

The billing record is mixed. In the January to March 2026 Citizens Advice comparison, British Gas scored 2.0 out of 5 for billing and metering, with bills accuracy of 88.12% on smart meters and 91.0% on traditional meters5. Its smart meters working correctly figure is recorded as not applicable5.
What the HomeCare warranty covers
HomeCare is sold as a ladder of four products, and the cover widens at each step. HomeCare Basic provides cover for the gas boiler and controls, including all repairs and, subject to certain terms, replacement of the boiler if necessary, plus accidental damage protection and an annual boiler service3. HomeCare Essential includes everything offered by HomeCare Basic but extends protection to cover repairs to central heating including radiators, pipework and hot water cylinder3.
HomeCare Classic includes cover for plumbing and drains in addition to the gas boiler, heating controls and central heating, covering repairs to leaking hot and cold water pipes in the home and outbuildings, the water supply pipe within the property boundary, and unblocking and repairing drains and waste pipes3. HomeCare Complete offers all the benefits of HomeCare Classic plus home electrics, covering repairs to the home and outbuildings' mains electrical system and wiring, and subject to terms, replacement and repair of the home's electric vehicle charger unit for breakdown, accidental damage, vandalism or theft3.
An annual boiler service is included as standard across the entire HomeCare range3. Separately, the boiler repair service includes all parts and labour, and quotes include a 12-month guarantee on all work and parts12.
British Gas Services Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority3. British Gas New Heating Limited is an appointed representative of British Gas Services Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority3.
What it costs

There is no single published price for a British Gas energy tariff, because the rate depends on the tariff chosen, the region and how the household pays. What is published is the structure: fixed rate products, a £75 per fuel cancellation charge for home energy customers, and the lower standing charge trial running from June 20261.
On the services side, the figures are clearer. HomeCare packages start from as little as £2.50 a month3. HomeCare Basic with a £60 excess starts from £19 per month at an introductory rate3. Those are entry points, and the price rises with the tier and the excess chosen.
For context on what heating costs in a home, official statistics put the annual cost of gas heating a three-bedroom semi-detached house at £1,300 to £1,500 at March 2026 prices, the cheapest heating fuel in the comparison13. That is a whole-house running cost, not a British Gas price, and it varies with the home and how it is heated.
Historical figures show how far the market has moved. British Gas's average bill was £1,190 in 2013, rising to £1,297 the following year14. A 2011 official statistic put the Great Britain average domestic gas bill at £749 on credit payment15. These are dated figures from a different market and are not a guide to current prices.
Company status, ownership and scale
British Gas was founded in 1812 as the Gas Light and Coke Company, and is headquartered at Staines-upon-Thames2. It is a subsidiary of Centrica1. British Gas Lite operates as a separate company serving small businesses with online-only smart meter energy management1. British Gas Evolve customers should continue their dispute with British Gas16.
The company's scale has made it the default destination for customers of failed suppliers. Ofgem appointed British Gas as Supplier of Last Resort for Tomato Energy's 15,000 customers after Tomato ceased trading on 5 November 202516. Rebel Energy's 90,000 customers moved to British Gas in April 202516. In June 2025, Centrica agreed a strategic import arrangement with Equinor giving it control of around 10% of the UK's gas supply1.
On prepayment, Ofgem records that British Gas has never been part of the prepayment market compliance review, was subject to a separate enforcement investigation, and does not currently carry out involuntary prepayment meter activity17.
"British Gas has never been part of the PPM MCR. It was subject to a separate Enforcement Investigation and does not currently carry out involuntary PPM activity."
Customer service: the published ratings

Two official sources give a picture of how British Gas customers rate the company, and they measure different things. Ofgem's supplier-level survey for July to August 2025, with a sample of 1,168 British Gas respondents, found 81% satisfied or very satisfied overall, 13% neither satisfied nor dissatisfied and 6% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied4. On customer service specifically, 77% were satisfied or very satisfied and 7% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied4. Ofgem noted that, compared with the average in that period, a significantly higher proportion of British Gas customers said they were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with customer service4.
The January 2026 survey, with 1,170 respondents, found 80% satisfied or very satisfied overall, 6% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, and 77% satisfied or very satisfied with customer service18.
The Citizens Advice comparison for January to March 2026 places British Gas 13th in the supplier table5. It scored 5 out of 5 for customer commitments and 4.2 out of 5 for contact waiting time, with an average call centre wait of 51 seconds5. It scored 1.0 out of 5 for fewer complaints received, with 68.7 complaints per 10,000 customers to Citizens Advice Consumer Service, the Extra Help Unit, Advice Direct Scotland and the Energy Ombudsman5. Billing and metering scored 2.0 out of 55.
The pattern is consistent across both: most customers are satisfied, a small minority are not, and the complaint volume relative to customer numbers is the weak point. A household weighing a switch can compare this record against other suppliers in the energy supplier customer service ratings.
Fuel mix: two published breakdowns that disagree
British Gas publishes a fuel mix disclosure, and two versions of it appear in the record. One lists British Gas electricity as 57% nuclear, 21% fossil fuel, 20% renewables and 2% other5. Another lists 76% renewables, 24% nuclear and 0% natural gas1.
The difference is not a rounding issue: one breakdown has fossil fuel at 21% and the other at zero, and one has renewables at 20% and the other at 76%. A household comparing suppliers on fuel mix should treat the British Gas figure as unresolved between these two published sets and check the current disclosure directly.
What is not in dispute is the wider context. Most heating in the UK is supplied by gas19, and the UK has been strongly affected by the energy crisis due to its dependence on natural gas for heating, electricity generation and industry20. The British Energy Security Strategy sets out how Great Britain will accelerate homegrown power for greater energy independence21, against a backdrop in which the UK is a net energy importer with a high dependence on gas and oil21.
What it means for household energy independence

A British Gas supply contract is the clearest example of the dependence that most UK homes have. The household buys gas and electricity from a national supplier, on a price set by wholesale markets and the price cap, delivered through the gas grid and the electricity network. Nothing about the arrangement changes where the energy comes from or who controls it. The company's own scale reinforces this: Centrica's import arrangement with Equinor gives it control of around 10% of the UK's gas supply1, which is a position of strength for the supplier and no change in position for the household.
The dependence has several layers. There is the fuel dependence, since most UK heating is supplied by gas19. There is the supplier dependence, since the tariff, the billing and the service relationship all run through one company. There is the network dependence, since the gas grid and electricity network are the delivery mechanism regardless of who bills for the energy. And on the services side, HomeCare adds a continuing relationship with the same company for the boiler, with the cover terms and the annual service tied to that contract.
What a household can change is the supplier, not the fuel. Switching supplier moves the billing and the tariff but leaves the gas grid, the network and the wholesale market in place. The routes that change the fuel itself, such as electrifying heat or generating on site, are covered in energy suppliers and household energy independence. For a household that wants to reduce dependence rather than simply change who it pays, the supplier choice is the smaller lever.
