Worcester Bosch Heating Controls and Thermostats

Worcester Bosch sells heating controls in three broad groups: traditional mechanical controls, digital controls and smart heating controls¹. The range runs from basic mechanical programmers to an internet-enabled smart control, and the flagship of the smart end is the Bosch EasyControl, described by the maker as the only smart internet-connected thermostat designed specifically for Worcester's boilers².

The controls question for most households is not which thermostat is best but which one fits the boiler already on the wall. Worcester Bosch publishes a Worcester boiler search for exactly that, listing the controls compatible with a given model¹. Guarantee length is the detail that catches people out. Worcester Bosch states that the guarantee of its EasyControl, CR11, Comfort and Sense range will match the Worcester Bosch boiler it is installed with, and that a control receives the same guarantee length as a new boiler if both are installed at the same time, with terms and conditions applying⁴.

What a Worcester Bosch thermostat does, and the control types on offer

A thermostat's job is to switch the boiler on and off against a measured temperature, and Worcester Bosch's range covers the three ways of doing that. Mechanical controls are the traditional clock and dial arrangement. Digital controls add a programmed schedule and a clearer display. Smart heating controls add internet connectivity, app control and, in some cases, room-by-room zoning¹.

The distinction that matters for running costs is not the display but whether the control modulates the boiler or simply switches it. A simple on/off thermostat runs the boiler at a fixed output until the room reaches temperature. Worcester Bosch's own boiler range shapes what a control can do. The company makes combination, system and regular boilers⁹. A combi heats water on demand and has no cylinder, so a thermostat on a combi controls heating only. A system boiler works with a stored cylinder, which is where hot water control becomes possible, and Worcester Bosch's system boilers are described as giving an instant supply of hot water to any number of taps at the same time and as compatible with solar hot water systems¹⁰.

That is the first layer of what controls do for independence: a well-matched control keeps the boiler in its most efficient mode and reduces the gas drawn from the grid. What it does not change is the fuel. A Worcester Bosch thermostat leaves the household on the gas network and on a gas supplier, with an electrical dependence for the control itself.

Bosch EasyControl: the thermostat built for Worcester boilers

The Bosch EasyControl is a smart connected thermostat that the maker describes as making it easy to control heating and hot water while saving energy³. It is the only smart internet-connected thermostat designed specifically for Worcester's boilers, and the maker states that future updates will allow compatibility with Bosch Smart Home Solutions³.

Compatibility is the reason it exists as a separate product. The EasyControl connects directly to Worcester Bosch boilers, and for other manufacturers' boilers it needs the EasyControl Adapter³. That direct connection is what allows the control to modulate the boiler rather than switch it, and it is the practical difference between a control designed for the appliance and a generic smart thermostat wired into the same terminals.

Room-by-room control is available where the household adds Bosch smart radiator thermostats. With EasyControl and Smart TRVs, the heating in each individual room can be controlled, and the TRVs carry a child-lock setting operated through the EasyControl³. Installation is not a DIY job. Independent guidance lists professional installation as required for the Worcester Bosch EasyControl Smart Thermostat, alongside hot water control, modulating operation, GPS tracking, a motion sensor, weather-responsive behaviour and program modes⁶. Smart thermostat compatibility: EasyControl, Nest and Hive

Modern Worcester Bosch boilers are compatible with a range of smart thermostats, including Google Nest, Hive and Worcester Bosch's own Bosch EasyControl⁹. That is the maker's own statement, and it settles the most common compatibility worry: a Worcester boiler is not locked to Worcester controls.

The three options differ in what they control and how they connect. Hive and Nest thermostats connect to your Wi-Fi so heating and hot water can be controlled through a smartphone, tablet or desktop¹¹. They also connect to Amazon Alexa, Siri and Google Home¹³. The EasyControl connects directly to Worcester Bosch boilers and controls heating and hot water³.

Hot water is where the options separate. The Google Nest Thermostat E offers no hot water control, though it does provide modulating and learning operation, frost protection and GPS tracking, with self or professional installation⁶. A household with a combi has no cylinder to control and loses nothing. Comfort I RF and the wireless digital controls

Below the EasyControl, Worcester Bosch's own-brand controls are the Greenstar Comfort family. The Greenstar Comfort+ I RF is a wireless control that allows the thermostat to be controlled at a single, easily accessible location, and it is supplied as a pre-paired wireless room thermostat and RF key receiver¹⁴. It is classed as a digital room thermostat².

The Comfort+ II RF goes further: it can programme and control central heating and domestic hot water at the room thermostat¹⁵. That makes it the more suitable of the two where a cylinder is present, because the hot water schedule is set at the same place as the heating schedule rather than at a separate programmer.

For households that want a third-party alternative, Drayton's Wiser range splits by boiler type: Thermostat Kit 1 is suitable for combi boilers and provides smart control of heating either via OpenTherm or relay switching, while Thermostat Kit 2 is suitable for system boilers and provides smart control of heating and hot water for conventional boilers with a separate hot water cylinder, via relay switching¹⁷. Which controls fit which boiler: using the compatibility search

Worcester Bosch publishes a Worcester boiler search that finds controls compatible with a given Worcester boiler¹. The Greenstar Comfort range has a separate published compatibility list covering the 8000, 4000 and 2000 boiler families⁴. Checking the model first is the step that prevents buying a control that fits the wiring but not the boiler's own connections.

The reason compatibility is not automatic is that controls connect to boilers in different ways. A direct connection, as the EasyControl uses on Worcester Bosch boilers, carries the maker's own signalling. A third-party thermostat typically connects through the wiring centre instead, following the thermostat maker's diagram, which is the arrangement set out in our heating controls wiring guide. Where a boiler is wired for a switched live and a permanent live, almost any on/off thermostat will work; where the household wants modulating control, the protocol has to be supported at both ends.

Two further conditions apply. The first is the boiler interlock, the requirement that the boiler must not fire when there is no demand from the controls, which is covered in our boiler interlock page. The second is the guarantee. Worcester Bosch states that the guarantee of its EasyControl, CR11, Comfort and Sense range will match the Worcester Bosch boiler it is installed with⁴, and that a Worcester Bosch control receives the same guarantee length as a new boiler if both are installed at the same time, with terms and conditions applying⁵. Setting a thermostat with a heat pump or hybrid system

Worcester Bosch boilers can be teamed with a heat pump to form a hybrid system, and the maker describes the appeal as the efficiency of a heat pump during mild months and the convenience of a boiler during a cold snap¹⁹. In a hybrid combination system, the existing heat generator is replaced with a hybrid heat pump and intelligent control, with hot water supplied by the boiler and the boiler supporting during cold periods²².

The control advice for heat pumps differs from boiler advice. Worcester Bosch's heat pump guidance is to adjust the thermostat gradually and only set the temperature you need, avoiding artificially high temperatures, and it states that there is no need to adjust settings on the heat pump unit because the installer applies the right configuration²³. That is a different relationship from a boiler, where the householder often adjusts flow temperature directly.

Weather compensation is the control feature that does the work here. On the boiler side, flow temperature is limited by the boiler's own programming. Worcester Bosch states that the boiler is programmed to increase its flow temperature by a certain number of degrees per minute, and that if it exceeds that rate a symbol appears, the burner stops for two minutes and then restarts⁸. What controls cost and what installation involves

Published prices for Worcester Bosch controls are limited. Independent guidance lists the Worcester Bosch EasyControl Smart Thermostat at £170⁶. Official guidance on the Great British Insulation Scheme gives average installation costs of £100 for a room thermostat and £80 for a boiler programmer⁷. Those are averages for the work, not quotes, and they do not include the control itself.

Beyond those figures, control prices are installer-quoted. The cost of the visit depends on whether wiring already exists at the right place, whether the control is wired or wireless, and whether the boiler needs any change to accept it. A wireless control such as the Greenstar Comfort+ I RF avoids running new cable to a thermostat position, which is often the largest part of the labour¹⁴.

Servicing and repair run through Worcester Accredited Installers, who can help with boiler repairs, services and new installations²⁷. Repairs are carried out through a network of registered, trusted engineers²⁶. Out-of-guarantee servicing can be booked even where there is no Worcester Maintenance and Support Plan, and if parts are required the engineer informs the householder during the visit²⁷.

The company's own claims about its standing are worth recording as claims. Worcester Bosch states that it has been named a Recommended Brand for its gas boiler range in a Which? report, that it is the only UK boiler brand to be endorsed by Which? for 17 years on its gas boiler range, that it is rated 5 stars for reliability with a 5 star customer rating, and that it has been warming homes for over 60 years³⁰. It also states that it has over 15 years of expertise in heat pumps, with an Electrified Solutions Team located up and down the country and marketing, technical and design teams on hand for installers¹⁹.

For a household weighing independence, the position is straightforward. A Worcester Bosch control keeps the boiler running to schedule and, in the smart case, to a modulating signal, which reduces the gas drawn from the grid. What remains is the gas connection, the electricity supply for the control and the boiler, and, for the EasyControl and comparable smart thermostats, a dependence on home broadband and the manufacturer's app for remote features. The longest guarantee depends on the control being installed with the boiler by an accredited installer.
