Bosch Smart Home Heating Controls

The Bosch EasyControl is a smart, internet connected programmable heating control sold in the UK through Worcester Bosch, available in black and white and in wired or wireless form¹. It manages central heating and domestic hot water from an app, learns household routines, and can be extended with Bosch Smart TRVs and individual room thermostats to control the temperature in each room³.

Its headline technical claim is an ErP rating uplift for the heating system: 5% when installed with a minimum of three Bosch Smart TRVs, or 4% without Bosch TRVs, and the higher figure applies when the control is installed with a compatible boiler and weather compensation is enabled⁴. The control is designed first for Worcester Bosch boilers, connecting directly to them, and reaches other manufacturers' boilers through the EasyControl Adapter⁴. Bosch publishes an end date for security support of 31 December 2032 for the EasyControl product family⁴. Prices are installer-quoted; Bosch publishes no list price for the control or its installation.

What the Bosch EasyControl is

The EasyControl is a wall-mounted thermostat with an internet connection, sold as a smart connected thermostat that makes it easy to control heating and hot water while saving energy³. It comes in black and white, and Bosch lists it as available wired or wireless, the wireless option using the EasyControl RF Key¹. Bosch describes it as the only smart internet-connected thermostat designed specifically for Worcester's boilers, with future updates intended to allow compatibility with Bosch Smart Home solutions⁴.

Physically it is a modest device. Bosch states that it needs no external wired sensor, and that it requires only a 2-core wire connection between the control and the boiler, or the RF Key where a cable is not wanted¹. That matters for retrofit work: a two-core connection is a far smaller intervention than a full rewire, and the wireless route removes the cable run altogether.

The control is part of a wider Bosch picture. Worcester Bosch sells it alongside its boiler range, and Bosch's separate Smart Home system covers devices, scenarios, heating, lights, shutters, smart plugs and window and door status, controllable by voice assistant⁶. The EasyControl sits at the heating end of that picture rather than at its centre.

For a household, the EasyControl is a control layer, not a source of heat. It does not change the fuel a home runs on, and it does not remove the gas connection or the electricity supply that fires and pumps the boiler. What it changes is when and where heat is delivered, and how much of that decision sits with the household rather than with a fixed programmer.

What it controls: heating, hot water and individual rooms

The EasyControl handles both central heating and domestic hot water. Bosch states that DHW and CH can be programmed, monitored and controlled via the app, and that hot water times can be set by going into the app and choosing when the boiler should provide hot water¹. That covers the two circuits a typical gas system runs.

Room-by-room control comes from the accessories rather than the wall unit alone. Bosch states that the EasyControl enables control of the heating in each individual room, and that with EasyControl and Bosch smart radiator thermostats, the heating in each individual room can be controlled easily⁴. The Smart TRVs are smart thermostatic radiator valves which, combined with the EasyControl, allow control of the temperature in each room³. Bosch's guidance on sleeping temperature makes the same point: devices such as the EasyControl and smart radiator thermostats give full control over what temperature it is in each individual room⁷.

For homes with radiators, water-based underfloor heating, or both, Bosch's smart individual room thermostats offer multi-zone control in combination with the EasyControl, in 230V and 24V versions⁸. These allow the temperature to be controlled directly on the device or remotely through the EasyControl app, and Bosch describes setting the heating system up to control individual rooms or multiple heating zones⁸.

One installation rule applies wherever Smart TRVs are used: a Smart TRV must be installed in the same zone as the EasyControl itself³. That is a wiring and zoning condition rather than a preference, and it shapes how a system is laid out before any valves are fitted. How it learns your routine and saves energy

Bosch describes the EasyControl as learning and adapting to homeowners' behaviour¹. In practice that means the control builds a picture of when the house is occupied and warm, and adjusts the heating to match. Bosch's guidance states that the presence detection feature makes for maximum efficiency, with the heating adapting to daily routine⁶. The company's boiler replacement page puts it more plainly: the control learns routines and adapts the heating to match, and can tell when someone has left home and adjust the heating accordingly¹¹.

The presence detection itself is automatic. Bosch states that the thermostat turns the heating down if nobody is in the house and detects when someone is returning home, and that the feature can be switched off in the app settings³. That switch matters for households who do not want occupancy inferred from their movements, or who have irregular patterns the control would misread.

Energy monitoring is built into the same app. Bosch states that the app provides easy-to-understand graphs of gas consumption for heating and hot water, and that it has the ability to include current gas prices to give accurate readings³. Bosch's own guidance on smart meters sits alongside this, describing how consumption data can be read and used¹².

The wider Bosch Smart Home position is stated with appropriate caution: adjusting the home for comfort only when it is actually being used can reduce energy consumption, depending on usage, the building and the connected devices⁶. That is a conditional claim, and it is the honest shape of the evidence. Learning controls shift when heat is delivered; they do not change the efficiency of the boiler itself. Boiler Plus compliance and the ErP rating uplift: 5% with Smart TRVs, 4% without

The EasyControl's regulatory position is one of its clearer selling points. Bosch states that it complies with Boiler Plus legislation¹. The 2018 brochure goes further, claiming that the EasyControl does not just meet one of the four minimum requirements, unlike most controls, but complies with three of them¹³. Boiler Plus applies in England; the devolved nations set their own building standards, and the general framework is set out at heating controls and building regulations.

The ErP figure is the one to read carefully. Bosch states that the EasyControl boosts the heating system's ErP rating by 5% with a minimum of three Smart TRVs, or 4% without Bosch TRVs³. The condition attached to the higher figure is that the control is installed with a compatible boiler and weather compensation is enabled¹. Weather compensation is the part that does the efficiency work, since it lets the boiler modulate its flow temperature to match demand rather than running to a fixed setpoint; the subject is covered at weather compensation.

The uplift is a rating adjustment applied to the heating system's ErP class, not a metered saving. Official guidance for notional dwellings in Approved Document L describes the benchmark as boiler interlock with ErP Class V controls¹⁴. Which boilers it works with, and when the EasyControl Adapter is needed

The EasyControl is built around Worcester Bosch boilers first. Bosch states that it can be connected directly to Worcester Bosch boilers, and that if a different manufacturer's boiler is fitted, the EasyControl is still compatible through the EasyControl Adapter³. Bosch describes it as the only smart internet-connected thermostat designed specifically for Worcester's boilers⁴.

The adapter is what widens the field. Bosch states that it gives increased compatibility with any combi boiler with an OpenTherm or on/off connection, and that its converter options cover OpenTherm, irt or a single channel 230 on/off⁵. OpenTherm is a modulating protocol, so a boiler that supports it can be driven at variable flow temperature rather than switched on and off; the protocol is explained at OpenTherm.

There is a system boiler condition in the earlier literature. Bosch's 2018 brochure states that system boilers with an integral diverter valve are supported provided the optional integral diverter valve is installed¹³. That is a specific configuration requirement rather than a general statement about system boilers, and it is the kind of detail an installer confirms on site. Bosch's own advice to householders is to speak to a local installer to find out more¹⁵.

The practical position for a household with a non-Worcester boiler is therefore conditional rather than closed. The adapter opens the door, but the connection type on the existing boiler decides whether modulating control is available or whether the control falls back to on/off switching. Wired or wireless installation, and upgrading from the Wave

Installation is offered in two forms. Bosch states that the EasyControl is available wired or wireless, the wireless route using the EasyControl RF Key, and that it can be connected to the boiler using a 2-core cable or the RF Key¹. The wired option needs only that two-core connection, which keeps the intervention small where a cable route already exists.

The upgrade path from the Worcester Wave is unusually simple. Bosch states that the EasyControl uses the same back plate and connections as the Wave, so the Wave control can be unclipped and the new EasyControl clipped in³. No new wiring is described for that swap. For a household already running a Wave, the change is a control swap rather than an installation job.

The app side of the upgrade is worth noting. Bosch states that the EasyControl app is only available on iOS and Android devices⁴. There is no browser or desktop interface, so the phone or tablet becomes the only remote interface. The same limitation is repeated in the Wave upgrade guidance³.

Relocation is possible. Bosch states that the control can be installed in a new property by updating the location in the app, or reset to factory settings with the reset button, which loses the current clock programme⁴. App, voice control and the wider Bosch Smart Home system

The EasyControl app carries the control functions. Bosch states that DHW and CH can be programmed, monitored and controlled via the app, and that the app is free to download and use, with the EasyControl sold including it and no subscription required¹. The app runs on iOS and Android only⁴.

Voice and automation integration is stated for Amazon Alexa and IFTTT devices, described by Bosch as a software update bringing integration with a smart connected home¹. The 2018 brochure describes connecting the control with other smart connected products using IFTTT¹³. The app landscape is split, and it is worth knowing which app does what. Bosch states that the Bosch Smart Home System App covers cross-domain use cases with Bosch and integrated non-Bosch products, while special functions sit in separate apps¹⁶. The Bosch HomeCom Easy App is a different product again, aimed at Bosch heat pumps and air conditioners, available on the Google Play Store and App Store, and covering products including the Compress 5800i AW¹⁷. Support, data privacy and how long it will be supported

Bosch publishes a support end date for the EasyControl family. The company states that security support for all smart controls of the EasyControl product family and the related sets it names runs to 31 December 2032⁴. That is a defined horizon rather than an open-ended commitment, and it is longer than some consumer smart heating products have received.

The comparison is instructive. Google withdrew software and security updates for first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats after 25 October 2025, leaving those devices without further updates¹⁸. Which? reports that Honeywell said it will offer two years of support from when a product is last available to buy¹⁹. Bosch's published date sits at the longer end of that range, though it is a security support date rather than a promise of new features.

Data handling is stated in local terms. Bosch states that all data is stored on the EasyControl, ensuring no information is shared with other parties and minimising cloud storage security risks, and separately that data is never shared with anyone else³. Automatic updates cannot be switched off: Bosch states that the thermostat checks the server and installs updates automatically⁴. That is a standing connection to Bosch's servers even where the household would prefer otherwise.

Support is available seven days a week, with Bosch listing phone hours of Monday to Friday 7.00am to 6.00pm, Saturday 8.00am to 5.00pm, Sunday 9.00am to 12.00pm and bank holidays 8.00am to 4.30pm⁴. The guarantee position is up to 12 years when the control is installed with a Worcester Bosch boiler³. Where the EasyControl's independence ends

The EasyControl's local behaviour is better than many cloud-dependent controls. Bosch states that the control can continue to work even when offline⁴. That means schedules and local operation survive a broadband outage, which is the failure mode households worry about most.

The limits are still real. Remote scheduling, energy monitoring and remote diagnostics depend on a working internet connection and on Bosch's servers, and the app is the only remote interface. Energy Networks notes that gas boilers and heating, electrical appliances and home internet and landline connections all stop working in a power cut²⁰. A control cannot route around a power failure, and a gas boiler needs electricity for ignition, controls and pumping regardless of which thermostat is fitted.

The support horizon adds a second dependence. A published security support end date of 31 December 2032 means the control's connected features have a defined life, after which the household's position depends on what Bosch does next⁴. For a household weighing energy independence, the EasyControl is a comfort and scheduling layer over a gas boiler. It reduces waste by heating rooms when they are used, and it can lift the system's ErP rating where weather compensation and Smart TRVs are fitted.
