How to Reset a Boiler After a Lockout

Most boilers lock out if they have failed to ignite three times in a row². The reset procedure itself is usually simple: press a button, hold a selector switch, or switch the boiler off and on again to reboot the system³. What matters is what happens next. If the boiler restarts and runs normally, the fault was temporary. If it locks out again within minutes or hours, the underlying problem is still present and repeated resetting will not clear it.

What a boiler lockout is and why it happens

A lockout is not the same as a boiler switching off normally. The Energy Saving Trust explains the difference: a boiler interlock switches the boiler off when the heating and hot water thermostats have reached their set temperatures⁷. That is the system working as designed. A lockout is the burner shutting down because it has detected a problem, and it will not restart until it is reset.

The causes divide into fuel supply, water pressure, and mechanical or electronic faults. On oil boilers, both Worcester Bosch and Grant state that a burner lockout can occur as a result of no oil or a leak in the pipeline⁸. On gas boilers, the heat exchanger is a common culprit: if the narrow pathways become restricted or blocked, the boiler will shut down to prevent it from overheating and getting even more damaged¹⁰. Sludge and debris in the system are the usual reason those pathways narrow, which is why system cleaning matters.

Pressure faults are the other large category. Vaillant lists trapped air in the system, low boiler pressure, high boiler pressure, a faulty thermostat, and debris and sludge building up in the pipes as causes of a boiler repeatedly switching off¹¹. Ariston adds voltage fluctuations and long periods of non-use, noting that after either the boiler can lock out¹².

For a household, the practical point is that a lockout is information. It tells you the boiler has protected itself. The next step is reading what it is telling you before touching the reset.

What the fault code or flashing light is telling you

Modern boilers display a code rather than a simple light, and the code narrows the diagnosis considerably. Vaillant states that an F28 or F29 error code indicates the condensate pipe needs to be thawed, and that this is the same code on all boiler models and types, whether system, open vent or combi¹³. Other codes point elsewhere. An ignition fault, where the boiler is failing to ignite or maintain a flame, shows as codes such as E133 or EA¹⁴. Overheating, abnormal temperatures and a safety shutdown show as E110 or L1¹⁴. On a Comfort Touch control, a flashing F means the boiler has a fault, possibly followed by a single or double digit code explained in the boiler's user manual¹⁵.

Older boilers without a display use a flashing red light instead. That light means lockout, and the reset procedure is followed until it goes out². A blue flame turning orange or yellow is a different matter entirely and could indicate a problem that needs immediate attention rather than a reset¹⁷.

Fix the cause first, then reset

Resetting a boiler that has locked out for a physical reason simply returns it to the same fault. The order of operations matters: identify and clear the cause, then reset.

Several causes have straightforward checks. If the gas supply has been interrupted, Viessmann advises making sure the gas is back on and then following the standard reset procedure, after which the boiler should start working again as normal assuming no other faults¹⁸. If a condensate pipe has frozen, SGN advises resetting the boiler once the pipe has defrosted, at which point it should start to work¹⁹. If the thermostat is not communicating, Vaillant suggests trying replacement batteries or moving the thermostat closer to its receiver, and if that does not help the thermostat may be faulty and need replacing¹¹.

For oil boilers, the fuel supply itself needs checking before any reset, since no oil or a leaking pipeline will simply lock the burner out again⁸.

Ariston notes that a reset is recommended after repairs or servicing so that the system resumes operation within optimum parameters, and that after resetting the boiler should start normally and no longer display the previous errors¹². That is the test: a successful reset clears the code and the boiler runs. A reset that clears the code for ten minutes and then repeats it has not fixed anything.

How to reset: dedicated button, sunk button or power cycle

The reset method depends on the model, and the manual is the authority. Vaillant advises always beginning the process by checking the boiler manual²⁰.

Three patterns cover most UK boilers:

1. A dedicated reset button. Press it and hold until the lockout light goes out.
2. A sunk reset button. Ideal describes this as poking the end of a pen into a button sunk into the control panel, with the manual as the check³.
3. A power cycle. Switching the boiler off and on again reboots the system³. Independent guidance suggests pressing reset and leaving the boiler off for 10 minutes⁶.

Ariston models

On Ariston boilers the RESET button sits below the unit display and is held for up to 10 seconds to unlock the boiler²¹. The button is usually on the front panel¹². On Ariston water heaters, depending on the model, the reset button is usually found on the control panel or behind the access cover²².

Low pressure: the common lockout you can fix yourself

Low pressure is the most common lockout a household can resolve without an engineer. Citizens Advice advises that if the pressure is below 1 bar, the manufacturer's guide should be followed to repressurise the boiler⁴. Underfloor heating guidance is blunter: below 1 bar can cause boiler lockouts²³.

Repressurising is a household task. Baxi states that topping up the water pressure in a boiler is quite simple and can be done without calling a heating engineer²⁴. Vaillant states that low boiler pressure can be fixed by repressurising the boiler via the filling loop²⁵. On combi boilers and pressurised systems, OVO advises that you usually just need to turn a valve to let in some more water, checking the boiler manual for the model's process²⁶.

Pressure loss has recognisable causes. It can happen after radiators have been bled and the pressure needs resetting, or when the heating has been off for a very long time, or because of a leak⁵. Most boilers need their pressure reset once or twice a year, and this can usually be done by the householder⁵.

The opposite fault is also common. Uswitch notes that high pressure can follow overfilling the system when correcting low pressure, or leaving the filling valves open by accident²⁷. Baxi publishes separate guidance on fixing high boiler pressure²⁴.

For a household, this is the clearest case of energy independence in the whole subject: pressure maintenance is a task the occupant can do, with no callout and no waiting for a supplier or engineer.

Why a boiler keeps locking out after a reset

A repeat lockout is the signal that the cause has not been addressed. Vaillant's list of causes for a boiler repeatedly switching off covers trapped air, low pressure, high pressure, a faulty thermostat, and debris and sludge in the pipes¹¹. Each of those needs a different response, and none of them is cleared by pressing reset.

Timer and control faults can mimic a boiler fault. Vaillant notes that timer settings may have been changed accidentally, that a power cut can reset the boiler timer, or that the clock may not have updated when the hours went forwards or backwards²⁹. On a separate system or conventional boiler with a hot water tank or cylinder, Alpha advises checking that the programmer is set correctly³⁰.

Some symptoms rule out a DIY approach entirely. A grinding noise means the pump may have failed: Ideal states it is vital to switch off the system and call an engineer, as a boiler without a pump is useless and could even overheat³¹. Water leaking from the boiler is usually the result of old and corroded washers, and Which? states a trained heating engineer is needed to open up the boiler and replace them³². If a non-combi boiler turns on for prolonged periods when not running hot water, E.ON Next advises getting a professional heating engineer to check the system³³.

When to stop resetting and call an engineer

The limit on resetting is a safety rule, not a suggestion. Oftec states that a burner reset should never be attempted more than twice¹. After that, the fault needs professional diagnosis.

Which? reports that two of the three most common boiler faults can be handled by a competent DIYer and do not always require an engineer's attention³². That leaves a clear boundary. A leak requires a qualified heating engineer as soon as possible, and the boiler casing should not be removed by anyone unqualified⁶. A fault unrelated to a power cut requires a Gas Safe Registered engineer³⁴. Servicing reduces the chance of a lockout recurring. Which? recommends a service every 12 months, and booking one in with a heating engineer if there has not been one in the past year⁶. For a household, the annual service is the maintenance counterpart to the reset: one clears a fault, the other prevents it.
