What load compensation does in practice is modulate the boiler's output against the difference between the setpoint and the measured room temperature, rather than firing at a fixed flow temperature until the room thermostat is satisfied. Compatibility is the constraint that shapes the whole range. Ideal states that Halo is only compatible with Ideal boilers, to ensure the greatest efficiency out of the central heating system, and that it does not recommend using the Halo controls range with anything other than an Ideal Heating boiler, because savings would not be the same with another manufacturer's boiler⁵. The Extended Warranty and what it covers

Ideal's Extended Warranty is an optional subscription or one-off payment giving extended warranty cover for an Ideal heat pump system, and plans are available to purchase for both in warranty and out of warranty products¹¹. The warranty covers any Ideal Heating equipment installed as part of the system, and the covered list includes the Ideal heat pump outdoor unit, the Ideal heat pump control unit, the Ideal pre-plumbed unvented hot water cylinder and associated components, and Ideal Halo thermostats and controls¹¹.

There is no fixed limit on callouts or repairs, provided the fault is covered under the terms of the warranty¹¹. Response times may vary depending on demand, location and the nature of the fault²⁴. On length, the maximum extended warranty term is stated as 7 years for the HP290²⁴.

The exclusions are worth reading before relying on the cover. The Extended Warranty does not cover non-Ideal equipment or third-party components, installation defects or system alterations, accidental, cosmetic or malicious damage, failure to complete annual servicing, general household issues outside the heat pump system, or damage from flooding or extreme weather unless explicitly stated in standard warranty terms¹¹.

Separately, Ideal offers a Lifetime Warranty providing ongoing warranty cover for as long as the Ideal heat pump system remains installed in the property and the plan is paid for, kept valid by maintaining the subscription and allowing an annual service²⁵. It covers the Ideal Heating supplied parts of the system, which may include the heat pump outdoor unit, the heat pump control unit, the pre-plumbed unvented cylinder and its associated components, and Halo controls²⁶. The Lifetime Warranty is stated to include the Logic Air heat pump, the Ideal heat pump cylinder and the Halo Air thermostat²⁵.

Holiday mode and everyday settings

Holiday mode appears across the range. The Halo Lite has a holiday mode to switch off the heating for a preset period without altering the schedule, and the Halo Lite RF datasheet confirms holiday mode is included³. The Halo Combi RF lists flexible scheduling, override, plus hours, fault notifications, holiday mode and child lock². The RF Electronic Thermostat includes holiday mode as well⁴.

The scheduling depth is six heating schedules per day⁵. Ideal states that there is currently no Night Set Back feature on the Halo, but that with six heating schedules per day there is the flexibility to add additional on periods with a lower setpoint to compensate⁵. In other words, the setback behaviour is built by the householder through the schedule rather than offered as a single named setting.

The Halo comes with a preset schedule, altered in the Timed Heating Schedules section of the menu⁹. The Halo Lite adds a manual mode to disable the schedule and control temperature with the dial³. App setup runs through the Ideal Halo app, downloaded from the appropriate app store, which guides the user through linking the control¹⁵.

Smart control, app dependence and the retrofit question

The Wi-Fi models add remote control and automation. Halo Heat and System Wi-Fi allows heating control anytime and anywhere through the flexible and intuitive Halo app, and provides flexible control of heating and hot water through that app¹. Halo Combi Wi-Fi works with an Ideal boiler to allow flexible control of heating with the Halo app, which can be connected to smart devices². Voice control is available on the Halo Wireless Thermostat: linking the Ideal Halo skill in the Alexa app enables control of the Halo device through Alexa, and the control can connect to Google Home or Alexa to adjust boiler temperature through verbal commands²⁷. The Halo wireless thermostat also includes a geolocation feature that senses where the household is and can automatically turn the heating off when everyone is out and on again when it detects someone is on the way home²⁸.
