When can I apply for the Winter Fuel Payment?

Do I need to apply, or will the money just arrive? When is the deadline if I do have to claim? And when does the payment land in my account?

Most people get the Winter Fuel Payment without doing anything, while others need to claim before the end of March, and the money usually turns up in November or December.

Short answer

For most households the answer is that no application is made at all. The Winter Fuel Payment is paid automatically to eligible people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and most eligible people will be paid in November or December 20261. A letter arrives in October or November telling the recipient how much they will get2. Where a payment does not arrive, the claim window runs to 31 March 20273.

The payment is worth between £100 and £300, and it is tax free4. Eligibility turns on reaching State Pension age by the end of the September qualifying week, which for winter 2026 to 2027 is 21 to 27 September5. GOV.UK states that a person born on or before 27 June 1960 can get the payment1.

Scotland runs a separate benefit, the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, which is also usually automatic and has its own application deadline of 31 March 2026 for winter 2025 to 20266. The Winter Fuel Payment itself does not extend to Scotland.

Most people are paid automatically, with no application needed

The default position is automatic payment. Most eligible people get the payment automatically and do not need to apply, and a person never needs to claim more than once: once in the system, payments continue automatically every year9. The same principle applies across the related winter benefits. Cold Weather Payments are automatic, so no application is made10, and in Scotland the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment is usually automatic if eligible, with no normal need to apply11.

That automatic route depends on the Department for Work and Pensions holding the right records. Where a household is not already known to the benefit system, or where circumstances have changed, the payment can fail to arrive. The published route in that case is to phone the Winter Fuel Helpline on 08459 15 15 1510. The Winter Fuel Payment Centre is the contact point for a payment that has not appeared, and the guidance is to make contact if nothing has arrived by 27 January 20278.

For a household's energy independence, this is a payment that reduces the cash cost of winter heating but does nothing to change the underlying dependence: the money flows through the same supplier account, and the home remains connected to the grid and, in most cases, to gas. It is income support for a bill, not a step towards self-sufficiency. Households looking at the wider picture can work through the practical steps in how to take more control of your home's energy.

Who qualifies: State Pension age by the September qualifying week

An older householder in plain winter clothing sits in an armchair in the living room of an ordinary English or Welsh home, with a radiator warming the room and a window showing cold weather outside.
An older householder at home in winter

Eligibility is built around a single date test. A person must have reached State Pension age by the end of the September qualifying week, which for winter 2025 to 2026 was the week ending 21 September 202512. For winter 2026 to 2027 the qualifying week is 21 to 27 September5. GOV.UK states that a person born on or before 27 June 1960 can get the payment1.

The payment is made to households rather than to individuals in the way some benefits are, and the amount depends on the ages and circumstances of the people in the household. A household with at least one qualifying person aged between State Pension age and 79 receives £20013. The published range across all household types is £100 to £3004.

Two conditions sit alongside the age test. The person must usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland; living outside those nations normally removes eligibility14. And the payment is not available to people living abroad: those who live outside England, Wales or Northern Ireland are not eligible15.

Northern Ireland follows the same rules as England and Wales, and the eligibility rules there are the same as for England and Wales5. Scotland is different, and is covered below.

When you can claim: the application window and the 31 March deadline

The claim deadline for the winter is 31 March 20273. That date matters only to households that are not paid automatically, because the automatic route has no application step at all. Where a claim is needed, it must be made by that date, and a late claim for the winter is not possible after it.

The pattern of deadlines has shifted year to year, which is worth knowing when reading older guidance. For an earlier winter, applications ran between 15 September 2025 and 31 March 202616. In 2022 the claim deadline was 31 March 202217. The structure is consistent: a window that opens in the autumn and closes at the end of March, covering the winter just passed.

There is a related deadline that catches some households. Pensioners applying for Pension Credit in order to remain eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment needed to apply before 21 December18. Pension Credit is a separate benefit with its own claim process, and the Winter Fuel Payment eligibility rules interact with it.

When the money arrives: November and December payments

The notification letter about your payment

Most payments are made automatically between November and December10. GOV.UK states that most eligible people will be paid in November or December 20261. The same timing is given in independent guidance: recipients are usually paid in November or December 20263.

The letter comes first. Eligible recipients get a letter during October or November5, and it tells them how much Winter Fuel Payment they will get2. The letter is the notification of the amount, not an application form, and it is the point at which a household can check the figure against its circumstances.

The timetable in full:

StageTiming
Notification letterOctober or November5
Payment into accountNovember or December 20261
Contact point if nothing received27 January 20278
Claim deadline31 March 20273

If neither a letter nor a payment has arrived by 27 January 2027, the Winter Fuel Payment Centre should be contacted8. That date is the practical backstop: it leaves time to resolve a missing payment before the claim window closes at the end of March.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland: where the payment applies

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual, lump-sum payment for older people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland12. All pensioners in those three nations will receive a Winter Fuel Payment during winter 2026/27 unless they choose to opt out15. Northern Ireland is included on the same terms as England and Wales5.

Scotland is not covered by the Winter Fuel Payment. Adults of State Pension age or over who live in Scotland are served by the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead, a benefit for adults of State Pension age or over who live in Scotland, who reached State Pension age during or before the qualifying week and lived in Scotland on at least the last day of the qualifying week11. That payment is usually automatic, and the deadline to apply for winter 2025 to 2026 was Tuesday 31 March 20267. It is a one-off, tax-free payment during the winter to help people with heating costs19.

Wales has run additional support alongside the UK-wide payment. The Winter Fuel Support Scheme enabled households to claim a one-off payment of £200 to provide support towards paying winter fuel bills, announced in February 202220. That is a distinct scheme from the Winter Fuel Payment and should not be confused with it.

Opting out, and the September deadline

A simplified isometric figure sits at a home desk using a laptop whose screen shows the GOV.UK online opt out form as a plain page with blank lines and colour bands, declining future winter payments.
The online opt out form

Receiving the payment is not compulsory. Opting out of the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026 to 2027 is possible until September 20265. The online opt out form closes at 11:59pm on 20 September 2026, and opting out by phone through the Winter Fuel Payment Centre closes at 6pm on 18 September 202615. Customers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland can opt out of receiving future winter payments through the DWP online form on GOV.UK21.

The two deadlines differ by channel and by two days, which matters for anyone leaving it late. The phone route closes first, at 6pm on 18 September 2026, and the online form stays open until 11:59pm on 20 September 202615.

Opting out is a decision about the payment, not about the underlying bill. A household that opts out still pays for its winter heating in full, and still depends on the same supplier and the same grid. The payment reduces the cost of that dependence; declining it does not reduce the dependence itself.

Tax-free and one-off: what the payment is worth

The Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off, tax-free payment made during the winter to help with heating costs22. It is tax free5, and it is not taxable22. Its purpose is to help pay winter heating bills5.

The amount depends on the household. The published range is between £100 and £3009, and the payment is worth between £100 and £3004. A household with at least one qualifying person aged between State Pension age and 79 receives £20013. An independent analysis of the scheme describes it as an annual, tax free lump sum payment of £200 to £30023.

Because the payment is tax free and one-off, it does not form part of taxable income and does not need to be declared. It is also distinct from other winter support. Cold Weather Payments are different to Winter Fuel Payments24, and households may be eligible for extra help with schemes like the Winter Fuel Payment or Warm Home Discount25. Prepayment customers may be eligible for extra help through programmes and schemes like the Winter Fuel Payment or Warm Home Discount26.

For households on a low income, the payment sits alongside a wider set of grants and benefits. The routes for checking what else is available are set out in how to check which energy grants you qualify for and how to apply for a home energy grant.

Reporting changes and checking the figures

A simplified isometric figure of an older person sitting at a table at home, holding a telephone handset to their ear while making a call to report a change of circumstances, with a notepad and pen beside them on the table.
Reporting a change of circumstances

Changes in circumstances must be reported straight away5. That requirement matters because the payment is calculated from records the DWP holds, and a change that is not reported can lead to an incorrect amount or a missed payment.

Official statistics on the scheme are published annually. The statistics cover the number of Winter Fuel Payments made in winter 2024 to 2025 to recipients and beneficiaries27. Those figures give the scale of the scheme, and they are the reference point for anyone checking whether the pattern of payments in their area looks right.

The payment is one of several winter supports, and it is worth being clear about which is which:

  • Winter Fuel Payment: annual, tax-free lump sum for older people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, paid automatically in most cases12.
  • Pension Age Winter Heating Payment: the Scottish equivalent, usually automatic, with its own qualifying week and deadline11.
  • Cold Weather Payment: a separate automatic payment triggered by cold weather, different to the Winter Fuel Payment24.
  • Winter Fuel Support Scheme: a Welsh one-off payment of £200 announced in February 2022, now historical20.

Scams around winter payments are a known problem, and the guidance on spotting and avoiding energy scams is worth reading before responding to any unexpected contact about a payment16. Households wanting to reduce the bill the payment goes towards, rather than just offset it, can start with how to prepare a home for winter.

Questions

Answers here, and more on their own pages.

How do I apply if my payment does not arrive automatically?

Most eligible people are paid without applying. If a payment does not arrive, the Winter Fuel Payment Centre can be contacted, and the guidance is to do so if nothing has been received by 27 January 2027. A claim for the winter must be made by 31 March 2027. A helpline number is published for people who qualify but are not paid automatically.

What is the qualifying week date I need to have been born before?

The qualifying week for winter 2026 to 2027 is 21 to 27 September. A person must have reached State Pension age by the end of the September qualifying week. GOV.UK states that a person born on or before 27 June 1960 can get the payment. For winter 2025 to 2026 the qualifying week ended on 21 September 2025.

When will I get the letter confirming my payment?

Eligible recipients get a letter in October or November telling them how much they will get. Most payments then arrive in November or December 2026. If no letter or payment has arrived by 27 January 2027, the Winter Fuel Payment Centre should be contacted. The letter is the notification of the amount, not an application form.

Can I opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment, and by when?

Yes. Opting out for 2026 to 2027 is possible until September 2026. The online opt out form closes at 11:59pm on 20 September 2026, and opting out by phone through the Winter Fuel Payment Centre closes at 6pm on 18 September 2026. Customers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland can opt out through the DWP online form on GOV.UK.

Is the Winter Fuel Payment taxable?

No. The Winter Fuel Payment is tax free, and it does not affect other benefits. It is a one-off, tax-free payment made during the winter to help with heating costs. Because it is not taxable, it does not need to be declared on a tax return, and it is not counted as income for the purposes of the payment itself.

What was the Winter Fuel Support Scheme and how does it differ?

The Winter Fuel Support Scheme was a Welsh Government scheme that enabled households to claim a one-off payment of £200 towards paying winter fuel bills, announced in February 2022. It is distinct from the Winter Fuel Payment, which is an annual, tax-free lump sum for older people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and from the Cold Weather Payment, which is a separate automatic payment.

Where do I check how much I can get and how to claim?

GOV.UK publishes the amount, eligibility and claim route for the Winter Fuel Payment. The payment is worth between £100 and £300, and a household with at least one qualifying person aged between State Pension age and 79 receives £200. Changes in circumstances must be reported straight away. Annual statistics on payments made are published for winter 2024 to 2025.
