SolarEdge launches Home smart energy ecosystem for three phase installations

SolarEdge has announced a three phase version of its Home smart energy ecosystem, combining a hub inverter, a 4.6kWh low voltage battery and a backup interface for homes with three phase supply.

SolarEdge announced on 18 July 2022 that it is rolling out a three phase version of its SolarEdge Home smart energy ecosystem, comprising the SolarEdge Home Hub Inverter Three Phase with Backup, the SolarEdge Home Battery Low Voltage and the SolarEdge Home Backup Interface Three Phase1. The announcement was made in a company blog post aimed at installers rather than at householders directly1.

The battery stores 4.6kWh per module, and SolarEdge states that multiple three phase batteries can be installed per inverter, providing up to 23kWh of backup power1. The storage is DC-coupled, which the company says avoids an extra conversion step between the panels and the battery1. The inverter is described as managing PV, storage, smart energy devices and electric vehicle charging, and supports up to 200 per cent DC oversizing, so more modules can be added to a roof on the same inverter1. SolarEdge says excess solar power above the inverter rating can be redirected to an EV charger or a water heating system1.

On backup, the company says the interface keeps solar power flowing through the home when the grid is down and automatically prevents power flowing back to the grid1. Householders can choose which household loads to back up and in what order, though SolarEdge notes this is pending firmware support with its smart energy devices1. The battery can be installed indoors or outdoors and configured through the SolarEdge SetApp, and multiple modules can be mounted in a tower and fixed to a wall1. SolarEdge cites multi-point temperature sensors and continuous monitoring of battery current and voltage as protection against overheating1.

"Homeowners can save power for peak demand periods, enjoy backup power during grid failure, and have true energy security."

Availability in the UK is not stated. SolarEdge directs readers to check with a local representative for expected availability by region1, and no UK price, launch date or certification detail appears in the announcement1.

Why it matters for households

Three phase supply is common in larger UK homes and in properties with high electrical demand, and until now much of the home battery market has centred on single phase equipment. A three phase battery and backup interface widens the options for those properties, where a single phase battery would otherwise constrain how much of the home can be supported during an outage1.

The practical effect for a household is the combination of storing daytime solar generation for evening use and keeping selected circuits running when the grid fails. The 4.6kWh module size is modest on its own; the 23kWh figure applies to a multi-battery installation on one inverter1. Which circuits stay live depends on how the backup interface is configured, and SolarEdge says the load ordering feature depends on later firmware1. Households weighing home batteries against a backup interface can compare how the two functions are separated in this design, and what battery backup in a power cut typically keeps running.

What happens next

SolarEdge has not published UK availability, pricing or a launch date for the three products. The company says expected availability varies by region and should be confirmed with a local SolarEdge representative1. The load prioritisation feature is described as pending firmware support with SolarEdge Home Smart Energy Devices1.
