Google has confirmed that support for its earliest Google Nest smart thermostats ends on 25 October 2025. From that date the Nest Learning Thermostat 1st gen (2011), 2nd gen (2012) and 2nd gen EU version (2014) will no longer receive software or security updates, and will no longer be controllable remotely through a smartphone or Google Assistant1.
The announcement was made on the Google Nest Community blog. Google said the difficulty of updating the early hardware was behind the decision1:
"As we look at what it takes to support your energy needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware."

Google has also said it will stop launching new Nest thermostats in Europe, citing the variety of heating systems and their hardware and software requirements across the continent. The 3rd gen Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E will continue to be sold in Europe while supplies last, and will still receive security updates and work with the Nest and Home apps1. Owners in Europe will be offered 50 per cent off the Tado Smart Thermostat X, with Google contacting eligible users by email with a personalised link to redeem the discount1. Google says owners can identify their model by looking at the display or the base of the device, or by opening the Nest or Home app1.
