Google has announced that it will no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe, and that support for its earliest generation models will end on 25 October 20251. The company confirmed the changes in a blog post on the Google Nest Community site, according to Which?1.
From that date, owners of the Nest Learning Thermostat 1st gen (2011), 2nd gen (2012) and 2nd gen EU version (2014) will no longer receive software or security updates, and the devices will no longer be controllable remotely via smartphone or Google Assistant1. Users will still be able to adjust the temperature and modify schedules directly on the device, so the thermostats continue to function under manual control only1.
Google said the decision reflected the difficulty of maintaining older hardware:
"As we look at what it takes to support your energy needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware."
On the wider European market, Google said:
"Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes. Therefore, moving forward, we'll no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe."
The Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen (2015) and Nest Thermostat E (2018) will continue to be sold in Europe while supplies last, and will still receive security updates and remain controllable through the Nest and Home apps1. Which? reports that all other Nest thermostat models sold in the UK, including those two, are unaffected1.

To identify which model is installed, Google says owners can look at the display or the base of the device, or open the Nest or Home smartphone app1. Affected users in Europe will be offered 50 per cent off the Tado Smart Thermostat X, with Google reaching out to eligible users by email with a personalised link to redeem the discount1.
