BYD Smart Device Hungary Kft. has issued a limited warranty for its Battery-Max Lite battery system that applies to units purchased on or after 1 August 20241. The document, version 1.1, names nine models in the range, from LITE 30 to LITE 90, and defines the original buyer as the entity that purchases the product for its own use and puts it into operation for the first time1.
The warranty sets different periods for different parts. Fans in the battery modules are covered for two years, the air-conditioning unit on the products for three years, and the other components for ten years from the warranty start date1. The start date is generally the first day after six months from the production date, though a buyer who can provide written documents such as a receiving note proving the delivery date to the installation site may instead choose the first day after 30 days from that delivery date1.
"BYD warrants that the product will either (i) remain at seventy (70) percent of its initial usable energy after (10) years of use or (ii) reach the Minimum Throughput Energy, whichever comes first"
The performance warranty is expressed as a capacity floor or a throughput figure, whichever is reached first. Minimum throughput energy rises with model size, from 73.88 MWh for the LITE 30 to 221.64 MWh for the LITE 901.
| Model | Usable energy (kWh) | Minimum throughput energy (MWh) |
|---|---|---|
| LITE 30 | 30 | 73.88 |
| LITE 37.5 | 37.5 | 92.35 |
| LITE 45 | 45 | 110.82 |
| LITE 52.5 | 52.5 | 129.29 |
| LITE 60 | 60 | 147.76 |
| LITE 67.5 | 67.5 | 166.23 |
| LITE 75 | 75 | 184.70 |
| LITE 82.5 | 82.5 | 203.17 |
| LITE 90 | 90 | 221.64 |
The document lists conditions that void cover, including installation more than one month after the warranty start date, operation with an inverter that is not on BYD's compatible inverter list, exposure to temperatures above 50°C or below -20°C, and the product not being operated for any period of six months or more1. It also excludes products not purchased in Europe, and requires the buyer to grant BYD or a BYD partner internet access to the product's performance data on request after a claim1. BYD states it will decide whether to repair or replace at its sole discretion, and that its aggregate liability will not exceed the purchase price paid1.
Why it matters for households
A warranty of this kind sets out what a householder can expect from a home battery over its working life, and the terms are narrower than the headline ten years suggests. The ten-year term applies to most components, but the fans and the air-conditioning unit, which are the moving and cooling parts most likely to need attention, carry two and three-year terms1. The performance promise is a floor of 70 per cent of initial usable energy after ten years, or a set throughput figure, whichever comes first, so a heavily cycled battery may reach the end of its performance cover before ten years have passed1.
Several conditions attach to the cover and depend on how the system is installed and used. The warranty requires a BYD certified inverter, so the choice of all-in-one battery system or separate inverter matters to whether a claim can be made1. It also requires the battery to be connected to the internet and to give BYD remote access to performance data on request, which links the warranty to the battery management system and its monitoring platform1. A battery left unused for six months or more falls outside cover, a point relevant to second homes and to systems installed before a property is occupied1.
For a household weighing home battery options, the document also sets out how a refund would be calculated if BYD neither repairs nor replaces a faulty unit, based on the market value of the product and the months since the warranty start date1. The warranty applies only to products purchased in Europe1.
What happens next
The warranty applies to Battery-Max Lite units purchased on or after 1 August 20241. No end date for the arrangement, and no UK-specific terms, have been reported.
