Which? published the results of its annual energy satisfaction survey in January 2026, covering 17 suppliers in Great Britain and naming four Which? Recommended Providers: E (Gas & Electricity), Octopus Energy, 100Green and Sainsbury's Energy1. The consumer body said its most recent results were published in January 2026, based on nearly 12,000 energy customers telling it about the service they receive1.
The customer survey ran in September and October 2025 and covered 11,945 members of the general public. Which? assessed firms' behind-the-scenes practices between September and November 2025, comparing approaches to methods of contact, supporting customers who need it, performance against smart meter targets, switching and complaints data1. The two scores are combined into a total score for each supplier1.
E (Gas & Electricity) ranked first of the 17 energy companies reviewed, with a total score of 79%, a customer score of 78% and a Which? assessment score of 79%1. Octopus Energy scored 74% overall, with a customer score of 79% and an assessment score of 69%; Which? said it is a Which? Recommended Provider for the ninth year in a row1. 100Green scored 72% overall and had the highest customer score in the table at 82%, with an assessment score of 61%1. Sainsbury's Energy scored 71% overall, 76% on customer score and 66% on assessment1.
At the other end of the table, Scottish Power had the lowest total score at 56%, followed by EDF Energy at 58% and British Gas at 59%1. Ovo Energy scored 61% and So Energy 60%1. Which? said the table covers providers available in England, Scotland and Wales, and directed readers in Northern Ireland to separate advice on NI electricity and gas firms1.

Sample sizes for the customer score ranged from 74 responses for Outfox Energy to 3,179 for British Gas; Which? requires 50 or more responses to give a rating1.
"Our most recent results were published in January 2026"
The survey also lists suppliers that have ceased trading. Which? said Tomato Energy ceased trading on 5 November 2025, after finding its rapid growth unsustainable, and that Ofgem appointed British Gas to take on its customers1. Rebel Energy announced it had ceased trading on 1 April 2025, with its customers transferred to British Gas1. Shell Energy was bought by Octopus Energy in December 2023, Bulb went into special administration in November 2021 with 1.7 million customers, and Npower shifted its customer base to E.ON in 20211.
Why it matters for households
Supplier service quality sits alongside price in determining what a household actually gets for its energy spending, and the survey results show a wide spread: the top total score of 79% against the lowest of 56%1. The customer score component reflects satisfaction and likelihood to recommend, while the assessment score reflects practices a household cannot easily observe before signing up, such as complaints handling and how well a supplier supports customers who need extra help1. For a home weighing energy supplier customer service ratings and complaints data, the split between the two scores is the point of interest: 100Green had the highest customer score at 82% but an assessment score of 61%, while So Energy had a customer score of 76% against an assessment score of 44%1.
The list of ceased trading suppliers is also relevant to continuity of supply. Where a supplier fails, Ofgem appoints another to take on its customers, as happened with Tomato Energy and Rebel Energy, both transferred to British Gas1. Households comparing who owns which UK energy supplier can see from the survey how consolidation has reshaped the market, including Octopus Energy's purchase of Shell Energy and E.ON's absorption of Npower's customer base1.
What happens next
No further dated steps are given in the survey results. Which? said its most recent results were published in January 2026 and that the customer survey behind them ran in September and October 2025, with the practices assessment running from September to November 20251. No date for the next survey has been reported.
