Warranty period for Wattpilot devices changed for devices delivered from this date

Fronius has extended the standard warranty on its Wattpilot electric vehicle chargers to three years, with devices delivered before 1 August 2024 keeping the earlier two-year term.

Fronius has changed the warranty period on its Wattpilot electric vehicle charging devices. The standard warranty for the Wattpilot is now three years, while devices delivered before 1 August 2024 carry a warranty of two years1. The maker states the position on its Wattpilot support page.

"The warranty for the Wattpilot is 3 years . Devices delivered before August 1, 2024 have a warranty of 2 years ."

The change turns on the delivery date rather than the date of order or installation. Fronius gives no further detail on how delivery is evidenced, and no transitional arrangements for units already in stock at distributors or installers have been reported1.

The Wattpilot range covers three versions: the Wattpilot Flex Home for fixed installation at home, the Wattpilot Flex Pro for billing-relevant applications, and the Wattpilot Go, a mobile solution. Each variant comes in 11 kW and 22 kW ratings, with connection currents of 16 A for the 11 kW versions and 32 A for the 22 kW versions1. The units are made in Austria1.

For homes with solar, the key feature is surplus photovoltaic charging, using automatic single-phase to three-phase switching across a range from 1.38 kW to 22 kW in ampere increments. Fronius says this gives charging steps of roughly 230 watts on one phase or roughly 690 watts on three1. Three charging modes are offered: Standard, Eco and Next Trip Mode1. PV optimisation requires a Fronius inverter with a Fronius Smart Meter at the feed-in point, though Fronius states it can also work with third-party inverters when combined with a Fronius Smart Meter IP or a Datamanager Box 2.0 and a Smart Meter at the feed-in point1. Only one Wattpilot at a time can use PV optimisation1.

On bidirectional charging, Fronius is explicit. The Wattpilot Flex carries ISO 15118 communication hardware, described as a basic requirement for bidirectional charging, but the maker states the device does not currently support bidirectional applications and that discharging a vehicle battery into the house or grid is not possible1. Fronius adds a caution that ISO 15118 hardware is often incorrectly equated with bidirectional charging in wallboxes from other manufacturers1.

Why it matters for households

A wallbox is a long-lived fixture, often installed once and expected to outlast several cars. The warranty term is therefore part of the value of the unit, and it sits alongside the separate question of who covers the installation itself. The EV charge point warranties and aftercare picture involves both the manufacturer's product cover and any workmanship cover from the installer, and the two can run for different lengths of time. Households weighing a Wattpilot against other units can compare the three-year term with what other makers offer under manufacturer warranties on home energy equipment.

The delivery-date cut-off also matters for anyone buying from stock rather than to order. A unit sitting with a distributor may have been delivered before 1 August 2024 and so fall under the shorter term, even if it is installed much later. Fronius has not said how a householder or installer would establish the delivery date in practice1.

For energy independence, the warranty does not change what the device does. The charger's contribution is in shifting car charging towards home-generated solar power rather than grid import, which depends on the PV optimisation setup and the metering hardware listed above rather than on the length of cover. The Fronius Wattpilot charger page sets out the modes and specifications in more detail.

What happens next

No further changes to the Wattpilot warranty have been announced. Fronius has not reported any change to the warranty terms for its other home energy products, and no end date for the three-year term has been given1.
