Enphase Energy, Inc. updated the UK version of its limited warranty for microinverters and related equipment on 14 June 2022. The document carries the note "(Updated June 14, 2022 to reflect new product names and customer support number)"1. The warranty itself remains dated "Effective April 20, 2020"1.
The warranty is described as "a voluntary manufacturer's warranty provided by Enphase Energy, Inc." and applies "in addition to statutory rights available to consumers under UK consumer laws, including under the Consumer Rights Act 2015"1. Enphase states that a consumer with a defective product "can choose to make a claim under UK consumer laws or under this Limited Warranty (whichever is applicable)"1. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the primary responsibility to provide remedies sits with the seller, so a householder who bought through a third-party reseller would need to contact that reseller to claim1. Consumer rights expire six years from delivery in England and Wales and five years in Scotland1.
Coverage depends on the product being bought from Enphase or an authorised reseller, staying at the original end user location, and that location being in the United Kingdom1. Warranty periods are unchanged by the June 2022 update:
| Covered product | Warranty period |
|---|---|
| IQ7, IQ7PLUS, IQ7X and IQ7A microinverters | 25 years from the Warranty Start Date |
| SKU C250-72-2LN-S2 microinverters | 10 years from the Warranty Start Date |
| IQ Gateway Standard or IQ Gateway Metered | 5 years from the Warranty Start Date |
| Mobile Connect, Consumption CT, Q-Relay-1P-INT or Q-Relay-3P-INT | 5 years from the Warranty Start Date |
The Warranty Start Date is the earlier of four months from shipment from Enphase or the date the product is activated in Enphase's Enlighten system, with activation defined as the PV solar system receiving "permission to operate" by authorities having jurisdiction1. Microinverters must be continuously connected to the internet through an Enphase Gateway, registered and connected within 45 consecutive days following the Warranty Start Date1.
"This Limited Warranty is a voluntary manufacturer's warranty provided by Enphase Energy, Inc."
If Enphase confirms a covered defect, it will "at its option, either (i) repair or replace the Covered Product free of charge, or (ii) issue a prorated credit or refund" equal to the current market value at the time of notification, as determined in Enphase's sole discretion1. Exclusions include "the cost of labour for removal or installation of a Covered Product", theft or vandalism, and software recovery1. Commercial or business use removes cover for business losses such as loss of profits or business interruption1. Claims must follow the Return Merchandise Authorization procedure1.
Why it matters for households
The update changes names and a support contact, not the length or scope of cover, so an existing Enphase owner's position is unchanged by the June 2022 revision. What matters for a home's energy independence is the conditions attached to the 25 year microinverter period: the equipment must stay at the original location, remain registered and continuously connected to the internet through an Enphase Gateway, and the household must keep the system's monitoring link alive. A manufacturer warranty of this length is only as good as those conditions, and the internet connection requirement ties long term cover to firmware and app support remaining available. Householders who bought through a reseller hold their statutory claim against that seller rather than Enphase, and anyone selling a home with Enphase equipment would need the buyer to submit a Change of Ownership Form and pay the applicable Transfer Fee within 30 days of transfer for cover to continue1. Labour for removing or reinstalling a unit is excluded, so a replacement microinverter may still carry a cost to the household.
