GivEnergy Software Ltd will begin charging a single monthly fee for cloud "premium" access from May 2026, according to guidance published by the Energy Storage Association on 17 April 20261. The fee covers remote access, historical data, automation and API usage, including third party remote access1. Local "standard" access remains free1.
The change sits alongside the administration of GivEnergy Ltd, company number 11571089, which entered administration on 9 April 2026 with Chris Brooksbank of CB Business Recovery appointed as Administrator1. GivEnergy Ltd is part of GivEnergy Group Ltd, company number 14404895, which contains other subsidiaries that are currently trading1. The administrator has not been appointed over GivEnergy Group Limited, GivEnergy Commercial Limited, GivEnergy Australia PTY Ltd, Giveducation Limited, GivEnergy Software Limited, GivEnergy Property Limited or Satori Education Limited1.
The association states that the app and portal are managed by GivEnergy Software Ltd, which is not in administration, and that no impact is currently expected to app and portal experience1. It adds that the system can continue to function independently of cloud services, and that the built in local management capabilities will continue to monitor battery cells and shut down if there is an issue1. GivEnergy has closed its support lines1.
"Cloud \"premium\" access will become paid from May 2026"
On warranties, the association states that GivEnergy warranties can only be enforced against GivEnergy itself and that its closure likely means households will be unable to claim against those warranties in the future1. It notes that buyers who purchased through an energy company, an installer or a wholesaler should consult these first, and that purchases made by credit card may be eligible for a refund from the card provider through section 75 protections in the Consumer Credit Act 19741. The association describes GivEnergy as the largest domestic battery manufacturer to stop trading to date, and says it is not aware of evidence that other battery companies plan to stop operating1.
| Access tier | Status from May 2026 | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Local "standard" | Remains free | Management over the home network through the GivEnergy app |
| Cloud "premium" | Paid, single monthly fee | Remote access, historical data, automation, API usage including third party remote access |

Why it matters for households
A home battery is only as independent as the software that controls it. The split between local and cloud access is the practical dividing line: local control over the home network continues at no charge and does not depend on the manufacturer's servers, while remote access, historical data, automation and API use move behind a monthly fee1. For a household that relies on automation to shift charging to cheap periods, or on an API link to a third party service, that function now carries a recurring cost where it did not before1.
The administration of GivEnergy Ltd is separate from the software company, and the association states the app and portal are not currently expected to be affected1. Hardware safety monitoring is built into the system and continues to operate1. The warranty position is the harder consequence: warranties enforceable only against GivEnergy Ltd are unlikely to be claimable in future1. The association advises against removing, tampering with or self diagnosing a battery or inverter, citing risk of serious injury or death from internal components of a high voltage system, and states that if a battery appears unsafe, such as being physically damaged, emitting smoke or steam or making a hissing sound, the area should be evacuated immediately even if the battery is outside, and the fire services called1.
What happens next
The paid cloud tier takes effect from May 20261. The association notes that it is currently unknown how the other GivEnergy Group companies will continue to operate, and that its guidance may change as new information emerges1. The amount of the monthly fee, and the terms for existing premium users, have not been reported1.
