Letters confirming eligibility for the £150 Warm Home Discount are being sent to households in Scotland from 16 October 2026 until January 2027, with around 345,000 Scottish households set to receive the discount automatically this winter1. That is an increase of around 250,000 households compared with previous years1.

The Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 rebate applied directly to electricity bills during the winter months, designed to help pensioners, low-income households and vulnerable families with energy costs1. Across Britain, around six million households are expected to benefit from the scheme1.

The rise in automatic payments in Scotland follows changes to how the scheme is administered. Previously, many people in Scotland had to contact their energy supplier and claim the discount themselves; under the changes, most eligible households will now receive the rebate automatically, bringing Scotland more closely into line with England and Wales, where automatic payments are already more common1.

Who qualifies

Households likely to qualify automatically include people receiving Pension Credit, and people receiving Universal Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance or Support for Mortgage Interest who also receive certain disability-related payments or premiums1. Some households with responsibility for a child under five are also included1.

Some households that do not qualify automatically may still be eligible through the scheme's broader group provisions, and those people should check directly with their energy supplier1. The letters being sent out will tell recipients one of two things: that they will receive the £150 discount automatically, or that they need to contact the Warm Home Discount helpline and provide additional information1. Anyone asked to phone the helpline must do so before 26 February 2027 to make sure they receive the payment1.

The £150 is not usually paid into a bank account. Instead, it is credited directly to an eligible household's electricity bill, so recipients should see the reduction reflected on their energy account during the winter1.

Why it matters for households

For a household in Scotland that previously had to apply to its supplier, the discount now arrives without an application, which removes the step where eligible people could miss out. The £150 is a fixed one-off reduction on the electricity account rather than a cash payment, so it lowers the winter bill itself rather than arriving as money the household can direct elsewhere. Because the credit is applied to electricity, a household's exposure to winter electricity costs falls by that amount, but the discount does not change the unit rate paid or the standing charge, and it does not carry over beyond the winter it is granted for. For homes weighing up the Warm Home Discount alongside other support, the scheme is separate from the Winter Fuel Payment, and the two are not alternatives to each other. Households that do not receive a letter are not necessarily excluded: the broader group route still exists, and eligibility under it is confirmed by the supplier rather than by the letter. The eligibility rules and the way the scheme operates in Scotland differ from the rest of Britain, and the comparison with the Winter Fuel Payment is set out separately.

What happens next

Letters are being sent from now until January 20271. Households told to contact the helpline must do so before 26 February 20271. No further dates for the scheme have been reported.
