Keston Boilers issues safety notice for boilers made between August 2022 and 7 January 2024

Keston Boilers has issued a safety notice for ten boiler ranges made between August 2022 and 7 January 2024, with a free engineer-fitted safety upgrade for affected homes.

Keston Boilers published a customer safety notice on 31 January 2024 covering boilers manufactured between August 2022 and 7 January 2024 across ten model ranges. The notice states that a potential fault condition could cause a small proportion of affected boilers to overheat and fail, and that a free safety upgrade will be applied by an engineer visit1.

The company, part of Ideal Heating, said the issue affects approximately 1 in 10,000 of the affected range. Its notice describes the mechanism: if an excessive volume of air becomes trapped inside the boiler in a fault condition, the boiler could overheat and fail1. The affected ranges are the Logic Combi 2, Logic System 2, Logic + Combi 2, Logic + System 2, Logic Max Combi 2, Logic Max System 2, iMini 2, Independent Combi 2, Keston Combi 2 and Keston System 21.

"There is an additional component that will need to be added to your boiler. This will be installed by an engineer and is an additional safety device that is above and beyond the safety measures already within the boiler. It will not affect the performance or efficiency of your boiler."

The upgrade visit is expected to take 30 to 60 minutes1. Keston says boilers in current production are not affected, and that Keston Heat models are also not affected1. Households can check whether their boiler is covered through a dedicated support webpage or by calling 0808 175 9173, and the company says it is directly contacting everyone who has registered the warranty of an affected boiler1.

Keston states that customers can continue to use their boiler, and advises repressurising it. Where a pressure gauge already reads 1.5bar or above, the notice says the system is at the correct pressure and does not need repressurising, though bleeding radiators may cause the pressure to drop, in which case it advises repressurising to 1.5bar1. Households that cannot repressurise the boiler are directed to the dedicated email address or the freephone number1. The notice does not state how many boilers are affected in total, and no figure for the number of homes involved has been reported1.

Why it matters for households

A boiler that overheats and fails in a fault condition is a safety matter inside the home, and the remedy here is a physical component added to the appliance rather than a change in how it is used. The notice is explicit that the boiler can stay in use while arrangements are made, which keeps heating and hot water available in the interim1. For a household, the practical points are whether the appliance falls inside the August 2022 to 7 January 2024 manufacturing window and one of the ten named ranges, and whether the warranty was registered, since Keston says it is contacting registered owners directly1. The upgrade is described as a safety device additional to those already in the boiler, with no effect on performance or efficiency1. The wider context is that a boiler is the appliance most homes depend on for heat, so a manufacturer-led safety upgrade is one of the few routes by which a known fault in a heating system is corrected at no cost to the household. Carbon monoxide and combustion safety in home heating is covered in our guide to carbon monoxide and home heating safety, and the Keston range is set out in Keston boilers: the UK range explained. The affected list also spans Ideal's own brands, covered in Ideal boilers: the UK range from Ideal Heating.

What happens next

Keston asks affected households to register their details through the support webpage or by phone so an engineer visit can be arranged, and says the visit takes 30 to 60 minutes1. No completion date for the programme, and no deadline for registering, has been reported1.
