Ovo Energy's £56m Extra Support Package opened for applications on 1 October 2025, the supplier has announced. The package offers eligible customers financial and practical help over winter, including emergency top-up, payment reductions, extended repayment plans and free energy-saving products1.

The company said the support covers four broad areas. Free energy-saving products include electric throws, smart sockets and home efficiency kits. Energy efficiency upgrades could include measures installed through GBIS, which Ovo described as ranging from loft insulation to a new boiler or heat pumps. Financial support covers Direct Debit reductions, emergency credit top-ups and extended repayment plans. Customers in the most financial difficulty will be helped by a specialist team2.

Ovo said it has provided £190m in support since 2022 and assisted 42,000 customers last year2. The supplier also published polling figures alongside the announcement: 91% of Brits said they were worried about their bills this winter, with 7 in 10 more concerned than last year. Two thirds (67%) supported a social tariff, 77% believed it would positively affect the most vulnerable households, and 53% believed it would make a considerable difference to them personally or to people they know2. Ovo continues to call on the government to introduce a social tariff offering discounted energy bills to low-income households, citing a Green Alliance report that such a tariff would lift more people out of poverty than the government's Warm Home Discount did in 20242.

Separately, Which? reported that Ovo Energy is on course to be bought by E.On, with the deal still subject to regulatory review and expected to complete in the second half of 20261. Which? also rated Ovo Energy lowest of the 17 energy companies in its annual customer survey, with a total score of 61%, and noted that Ovo scored 9 out of 10 in its assessment for helping customers who need it1.

Why it matters for households

Support of this kind sits alongside, rather than replaces, the wider help with energy bills and debt in England that households can access, and the energy debt and repayment plans that determine how arrears are cleared. For a household in arrears, an extended repayment plan or a Direct Debit reduction changes the monthly cash position directly; emergency top-up matters most to prepayment meter customers, who can otherwise self-disconnect when credit runs out. Free efficiency products such as electric throws and smart sockets reduce the amount of energy a home needs to buy in the first place, which is the part of the bill a household controls most directly. Energy efficiency upgrades installed through GBIS reduce consumption over the longer term, which lowers exposure to future price movements rather than only this winter's bills. The suppliers hub sets out how individual suppliers' support schemes compare, and the bills price cap hub covers the regulated limits on unit rates and standing charges that sit behind them.

What happens next

Applications for the enhanced winter support opened on 1 October 20252. Ovo has not reported a closing date for the package in the material published at launch. The E.On acquisition of Ovo Energy remains subject to regulatory review, with completion expected in the second half of 20261.
